C O N T A C T     me here

I began this canvas a while back, then set it aside; it was in oils and I was finishing other paintings in acrylic. But those unfinished paintings continue to call to you!  So I continued with it some more until I was satisfied . . . here is "City Vernacular, version five".

This is in a much different color palette than usual; the other paintings in the "City Vernacular" series can be viewed here  Recent Abstracts  .

I'm working on two other art-related projects so the flow of paintings from my studio has been slower the last few months!  I love it when I can return to painting again.

sold! "Days Can't Be like the Nights", abstract by Lynne Cunningham

sold ! "Days Can't Be Like the Nights"
acrylic on panel
16" x 12"

This geometric abstract has sold!  It's the result of playing at the end of a long painting day. . . and that's when I seem to create some very effective, pleasing paintings.  Simple, but I like it and so does the buyer!

Cover Art ! "Midsummer Chroma" is cover for local magazine, Oct. 2013! Lynne Cunningham

I had the pleasure of seeing my abstract floral on the cover of a local magazine - again!  It's pretty wonderful to see your work in print.  The editor came by my studio last month for a good visit ~ I'm happy to have met her in person and chat after trading emails.  With all my other stuff going on, I nearly forgot to post this coverpiece . . .it's still October so please enjoy this one in warm colors, with the feeling of fall and definitely an abstract garden / abstract floral!

The original painting is acrylic, acrylic inks, oil and oil pastel on canvas, 24" x 30".  I may have posted a similar version earlier; I re-worked this painting in May ~ and I think it's improved in this version.

"Abstracts from Life", abstract painting classes by Lynne Cunningham

"Stand of Birch Trees"
oil on canvas, 20" x 20"

The painting above was painted in 2007 after I spent a couple weeks as an artist-in-residence with Whiskeytown National Recreation area , located within Shasta County, Northern California . . .that place made a longlasting impression on me!  "Abstracts from Life" has been an ongoing theme in my paintings.

So how DO you get from the first step, of being inspired by the beauty of the natural world, to creating an abstract painting of the landscape?  The painting above and the painting below have had great feedback so that I know these appeal not only to me, they also appeal to a big variety of art appreciators.

This process is what I find the most interesting to instruct, and I've taught "Abstracts from Life" either incorporating a condensed version into another class, or instructing as a focused class.  In the next few weeks I'll be instructing how to abstract forms from nature , distilling and extracting the shapes, and coming up with finished paintings that are expressive . . . .a key idea for painting.   I have a private-instruction student flying in from the East Coast and we'll spend a week in my studio, painting in acrylics.  I'm now prepping supports (panel, paper) for technique demonstrations and playing around . . .another key idea!

If your group is interested in hosting a workshop on this topic, or if you can travel to Northern California please contact me for some details.  I promise it's a fun and highly informative approach to painting abstracts. Acrylic on paper is my preferred medium .

sold! "Fun Zone", small abstract by Lynne Cunningham

"Fun Zone", acrylic + oil paint on panel

Paintings can be fun and expressive . . .in smaller homes or small spaces sometimes all you want from an art piece is that it be simple, fun and that the art adds color to the space. . . this one would fit that description! I totally enjoyed painting this little abstract.

Here's a gallery page on my website   to view the paintings in this ongoing show for August / September; contact me if you'd like information on where to purchase any on that page.

Cover Art!  My painting is the cover for Inside Arden,
September, 2013 issue
includes a short bio and an article on the CAST Tour
Capital Artists' Studio Tour , 9/14 and 9/15
Sacramento , California

There's been a very nice flurry of media pieces that include my art lately!   "Inside Publications" contacted me recently and asked for artwork and a short bio, which I submitted and a few emails later I was given the news my painting "Domain of the Frog" is the cover art for the September issue!

This is so awesome because it's in time for the CAST Open Studios.  The full name for our event is the Capital Artists' Studio Tours, aka CAST.  The tours are sponsored by the Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento.  The link to the Tour Guide is here; our studios are #130A thru #130D in the Guide, in the link below:

This painting was completed a few years back;  it is sold  . . .I have notecards and prints will be available of the painting.

It would be wonderful to see you if you're in the area for the CAST tour, September 14th and September 15th!

sold! abstract by Lynne Cunningham; cover art for September magazine

sold !  "Simplicity, version two"
acrylic on panel, 12" x 12"

This painting has recently sold!  I love creating artwork;  I almost get as much enjoyment out of seeing the work appreciated by others as creating it, although I haven't met the buyer.  I might dedicate this to the instructor I had years ago who stated to a classroom full of about 25 students  "you should NOT use pink with orange".  . . .here's to listening to your own (true) voice!

Here is a link on my website   to view the paintings in this ongoing gallery show for August / September; contact me if you'd like information on where to purchase any on that page.

So much is going on at the moment with my art!  Below is the image which is a preview of  a magazine cover for the September issue.  We have artist Studio Tours in my metropolitan area coming up and there's been some wonderful recognition of my artwork! This painting "Domain of the Frog" was created a few years back; it sold a couple years ago but this is the one the editor wanted for the print issue.  I'm really happy with her choice as well as being featured!

More of  my art news is here.     You can easily contact me through the Contact Artist page if you're interested in the art shown on my website.

Sold ! Color study / portrait of a geese couple by Lynne Cunningham

Geese - color study of a geese couple
oil on canvas

12" x 16"

sold!   -  July, 2013

I set up a display at a small fair in my town of Davis, California on Sunday; I do shows sabout 3 times a year . . . it's fun when your display is finally set up, ready to show and then comes the anticipation.  The anticipation is for what kind of day it will be, see who comes by, and what direction the conversations take, especially interesting in my town where we have a big appreciation for the arts.

One also receives immediate feedback on the art you are making when you see what pieces are being picked up, what gets sold and what you hear from people's reactions.  It's always a little surprising as it was on Sunday - my figurative work of these geese was the first sale.   I also had a fascinating conversation with a young guy who is doing concept art - the illustrative / sci fi or fantasty / super hero genre of art that's based on figurative and is a really interesting fusion.

The interest in the geese, the conversation about figurative got me to thinking again.  I'm going to paint and draw some more contemporary figurative this coming fall / winter, more in the abstract !

I do take commissions;  take a look at my figurative section  H E R E
I paint from good photos for commission, and love painting people, animals and boats!  Some information on purchasing a painting from here may be found    H E R E

Any questions, comments you may contact me through my website or this L I N K

This vivid expressionist painting reminded me of the abstract paintings of Joan Mitchell - - which explains the meaning behind the title.  I love this palette of colors !  Saturated warm colors of vermillion, rose and sunset hues with warm grays and the pale warm cream color showing through.

This painting will be a stunner when framed!

This acrylic on paper painting is packaged for shipping with protective foamcore backing, ready for your framing in a standard sized, off the shelf 16" x 20" frame.

"Tibouchina, version two", framed acrylic floral by Lynne Cunningham

"Tibouchina, version two", acrylic on paper painting
frame:  matt-finish contemporary frame,
in silver tone with burnished surface

framed size:  9" x 7 1/2"

$95. plus shipping,
shipping,  U.S.A. and Canada:  $25.

These abstract florals look great in the burnished metal frame.  The silver color complements the painting, as well as a lot of interiors with different decor styles; the frame has a hand-crafted appearance and at the same time looks contemporary.

On a recent visit to San Francisco I saw these large tropical plants around Union Square - they are more bluish in real life but this is an abstract floral! I thought the magenta color better with the green.    Please note, California residents add 8% sales tax to the price of the painting.

completed June, 2013

$275. as shown above

This is a recent large acrylic on paper painting of mine;  a celestial abstract, or a watery abstract!  I decided on the title 'Oceania' because of the beautiful cerulean blue being reminiscent of the oceans.  This painting has a lot of texture and subtleties in the smaller areas of the painting.  Hope you enjoy this!

This painting is shipped protected with foamcore, ready for your matting and framing.  Below is a view of how I usually frame acrylic on paper paintings, in a contemporary wood frame with wide white mat  - this is a preview of the appearance when framed.

I love cityscapes !   I created this painting a while back, with oil paints on canvas with a palette knife.  I so enjoyed working out the design for this painting.  Somehow the color palette is not overly saturated but colorful - it's the complementary colors in this palette, and it makes the warm colors pop!

The painting is finished on the sides, wired and ready to hang.  It is signed on the front and the back.  It's shipped, protected and cushioned in plastic wrap, and double-boxed .  California residents add 8% to the price shown above.
