"Classic Venice Dusk" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

This is a little painting, miniature, just something to remind me of the beauty of Venice, Italy.  There's no other place like it, positively mesmerizing.

"Twilight Over the Rocky Mountains" by Karla Nolan, miniature unframed palette knife oil painting

A little gem of a painting, miniature, actually, this is to me the quintessential Rocky Mountain/Colorado sunset.  I have always been struck at how the mountains are a dark silhouette while the remains of the sun and the successive colors over that, then the various blues of the skies are layered.  I love Colorado!

"Hill Town Spring (Italy)" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Ah, Italy, hill towns, Tuscany, and Spring!  Fields full of red poppies, unbelievably vibrant.  The curvy and steep roads leading into the town of Cortona.  The old buildings, rugged stones from years ago.  Just have to love this place!

"Aurora Borealis Over the Mountains" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

A disclaimer here, this is not the real aurora borealis, it's my imagination!  I had fun with this one, mixing colors in and out, deepening the silhouette of the mountain range with trees in view.  A little bit of artistic license, possibly, but a whole lot of fun to paint!

"Sparkly Western Sunset" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

I painted this sunset a while back with my handy palette knives and couldn't decide on a name for it.  Looking at it in different lighting situations, I kept notice how sparkly it was, a high gloss varnish added to the colors greatly.  Thus the name was born:  "Sparkly Western Sunset" -- because that is what it is, full of life and color!  A sweet miniature...

"Magenta in the Sky" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

Vibrant colors in the sky for this miniature painting on glass, sold framed as shown!  Magenta was the "in" color when I lived outside of St. Louis in the 1960's, I remember that as if it were yesterday.  I convinced my mother to buy me an "outfit" in that bright, hot color, but I felt conspicuous in it, as it was a new hue for me.  I mainly lived in red.  It doesn't seem that long ago to me, I know that decades have past, but I still like the magenta tones in the skies when I see them!

"Magenta in the Sky", 5"x5" framed painting on glass (measured edge to edge glass), $100 includes s/h in continental U.S., Paypal accepted, click button below or write me for more information at KarlaNolan@gmail.com

"Sunny Day Cliffs of Moher" by Karla Nolan, original watercolor and ink miniature painting matted to 5"x7"

The Cliffs of Moher are among Ireland's most famous sights.  Traveling up the coast to see them, they were was so covered in fog we couldn't get into the parking lot (we couldn't really see anything!).  The next day we attempted again to visit the cliffs and this time succeeded in our quest.  There wasn't as much sun that day as there is denoted in the above watercolor painting, but it was an exhilarating experience being so close to the cliffs and the water.  Highly recommended!

"The Arches of Utah Beckon" by Karla Nolan, 4"x12" unframed palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas

I love the red earth and blue skies of the West.  The U.S has so many varied regions in it but the wide open skies and the ruddy orange and vermillion tones of  Terra Firma speak to my memories.  I hope we go back to Utah soon and see the Arches, Capitol Reef, Zion and so on................

"Poppy Progression" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

From bud to just open to completely smiling at the sun, here are the red poppies once again.  Mother Nature does have a way with flowers, doesn't she?  Poppy seeds are so small, it's more than a miracle we have such lovely blooms!

"Seattle Sunset Sail" by Karla Nolan, unframed 4"x6" miniature palette knife oil painting

Another take on Seattle, this time at dusk with the sailboats out on the water.  I guess I could easily drive up the road to Horsetooth Reservoir this summer and see a similar sight, however it certainly wouldn't be near the ocean, would it?  We are basically landlocked here.  That's okay, it gives me a good excuse to travel to the ocean once in a while, and I really do appreciate those opportunities.  Doesn't it look like fun out there?

"Glowing Clouds Near Seattle" by Karla Nolan, unframed 6"x4" miniature palette knife oil painting

I've only been to the northwestern part of the United States one time, but it was an impressive region to visit.  Luckily, it was springtime so there were some warm days.  I did notice how the clouds could just hang on one in Seattle, very unlike my beloved Colorado.  I'm so accustomed to blue skies and reddish/brown earth -- well, this terrain had floaty light grey or blue skies and the waters of the Pacific Ocean.  Delightful seafood, great sounds -- and, oh, by the way, did I mention some beautiful and inspiring sunsets?

"Crackling Sky" by Karla Nolan, miniature unframed palette knife oil painting

I can almost smell it in the air, springtime is around the corner, although you may not believe it today in my part of the woods -- it's gray and cloudy but warmer than it has been -- I'm just waiting for the sky to open up with rain, get a few bolts of lightning up there, roar of thunder.  Of course, I am jumping the gun, the official date is three weeks away for the season change and here in Colorado, the real date may as well be May.  I am such a dreamer!  (The top photo is the original painting, the bottom is an example of it framed.)

"Just Before the Rain Falls" by Karla Nolan, 5"x7"" miniature palette knife oil painting

Okay, I know that I'm jumping the gun a little bit, it's still winter and we have snow on the ground to prove it, but Spring is just around the corner and that means rainfall.  I love that period of time just before the precipitation starts, just before the rain falls, that "ozone" smell in the air.  Don't you?

"Windswept Lightning Over the Rockies" by Karla Nolan

A miniature palette knife oil painting, this little gem was more difficult to paint than one might think.  Trying to get a "wind" feeling, add in the lightning bolts and still imply snow on the top of mountains plus an impending storm -- all at once, of course -- well, I think I may have pulled it off!  I had a blast painting this one....

"Orange Spark" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting, colorado, broncos, sunset, rocky mountains

Okay, okay, the Broncos lost.  I'm not a gung-ho football fan by any means, but many relatives and friends who are near and dear to me really did look forward to the Super Bowl and the idea of the Broncos winning.  I know they're disappointed, so this art blog is for them -- there's always next year!  (The lower photo is an example of the artwork framed, please note that it's sold unframed.)

"Mystery" by Karla Nolan, UNFRAMED miniature palette knife oil painting

I'll need you to use your imagination a bit here -- you can see the actual unframed painting of night skies, "Mystery", at the top of this blog and then an example of a framed painting with the same painting.  Please pretend that the matting is a linen mat -- I didn't have one the correct size on hand -- and you can see how a miniature painting can increase to more of a presence.

We are so close to winter now, the darkness arrives so early, what really is in the sky above?  It's just a mystery to me!
