"Coalescence" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

I enjoy the late part of the day, just before dusk, especially when viewing anything relating to water (reservoir, lake, river, stream, ocean).  The way the light of the sky bounces off the water is especially intriguing and putting all of the hue together makes for a great challenge.  I hope I've met it in the painting.

"Dusk In The Forest" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

The most evocative time of the day for me, I love the sometime quietly colorful skies at dusk.  Imagine walking up the road in the forest at this lovey time of day and you can see my vision.  This is a small painting that is ready to pop into that frame and put on the wall!

"Sorbet Sunset" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

The dark silhouette of the foothills and mountains, the warmth leaving the skies, nightfall is ahead.  What does any of this have to do with sorbets, the light treat between meal courses?  Nothing!  Nothing at all!  I was just inspired by the colors of the sorbets I recall having at a few fancy dinners.  (Wink!)

"Dusk Quietly Approaches" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

Anyone who has followed me on-line knows how I am fascinated by the skies, especially at sunset.  I had painted this particular scene many years ago from a reference photo with a bit of a different composition.  Ten years later or so, here it is once again in a larger format, some different hues, and I find myself just as fascinated as ever as the sun goes down.

"Memories of Maui" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on canvas

It has been some years since we went to Hawaii and I was interested in viewing the sunset.  What a sunset it was, the sky on fire, the island across from us dark, the faint glimmer of reflections in the deep waters.  Unlike any other sunset I've seen, this is my interpretation.

"Orange Skies, Yellow Moon" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

A full moon in orange skies with mountains in the foreground, this is a small palette knife oil painting that was a delight to paint.  I love the skies, the moon, the sun, the mountains and I'm on a mission to share that appreciation with you!

"Flying to The Moon" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas

Some more lunar fun.  This is a sizeable painting, perfect for over that sofa that needs freshening.  And who says a moon can't be pink?  Hints of waterfalls, obvious mountains, a bit more rugged terrain maybe?  Drifty atmosphere in the sky....and so on.

"Seaside Moon" by Karla Nolan, 8"x10" palette knife oil painting

Many moons ago (no pun intended!), I visited my dear friend Missy in Newport, Rhode Island.  We went to a golf club for dinner that had quite the view, very reflective as the sun descended over the water.  This is my attempt to capture a sliver of time during that sundown.  I like it.  I hope you do, also.  By the way, I do not play golf, have no ambition to do so, as I know how my right arm would hate me, it already does from painting!

"Classic Venice Dusk" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

This is a little painting, miniature, just something to remind me of the beauty of Venice, Italy.  There's no other place like it, positively mesmerizing.

"Vibrance" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Another Colorado Rocky Mountain sunset, this with particularly vibrant colors, hence the name! This one is big enough, once framed, for a fireplace mantel!  More of my "I Love Colorado!" series.

"Twilight Over the Rocky Mountains" by Karla Nolan, miniature unframed palette knife oil painting

A little gem of a painting, miniature, actually, this is to me the quintessential Rocky Mountain/Colorado sunset.  I have always been struck at how the mountains are a dark silhouette while the remains of the sun and the successive colors over that, then the various blues of the skies are layered.  I love Colorado!

"Last Glimpse of the Sun" by Karla Nolan unframed palette knife oil painting

Looming over the water, just coming into view, the last rays of the sun, the sun itself, dipping behind the water, moon on the rise.  These are the breathless moments of a sunset.

"Clouds of Coral" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Being a sunset fan, I have found that there are so many colors in the clouds and they change so quickly, sometimes one has to make choices in what to represent.  Coral colors in the clouds seem to move through the skies fast, they're hard to catch with a camera for a reference photograph.  So, what does an artist do?  She uses her artistic license, of course!  If you can, enlarge this painting, as you'll see many colors in it that could be missed at first glance.

"Sunset Sail" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

Another sunset, this with a sailboat and a different ocean -- the Pacific!  I'll take any ocean or bay or river, as long as I can look up at the skies and see the ever changing clouds.  Throw in a boat, and, wow, what great painting material!

"Newport Sunset" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

About a decade ago I visited my dear friend Missy in Newport, Rhode Island.  I love ocean sunsets and while we were preparing for dinner, having a glass of wine and an appetizer, I glanced outside the restaurant and, lo and behold, the sun was just beginning its trip down behind the Atlantic Ocean for another day.  I must have photographed 30 different phases of this sunset, being completely smitten with the wondrous sight.  Here is one of those quick seconds for you.

"Aurora Borealis Over the Mountains" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

A disclaimer here, this is not the real aurora borealis, it's my imagination!  I had fun with this one, mixing colors in and out, deepening the silhouette of the mountain range with trees in view.  A little bit of artistic license, possibly, but a whole lot of fun to paint!

"Sparkly Western Sunset" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

I painted this sunset a while back with my handy palette knives and couldn't decide on a name for it.  Looking at it in different lighting situations, I kept notice how sparkly it was, a high gloss varnish added to the colors greatly.  Thus the name was born:  "Sparkly Western Sunset" -- because that is what it is, full of life and color!  A sweet miniature...

"Rocky Mountain Dusk" by Karla Nolan unframed palette knife oil painting

This is a larger painting, 16"x20" unframed.  It is the quintessential Rocky Mountain scene, so typically Colorado.  If you want to get an idea of what it is like to live near the mountains, just look at this painting, I think you'll get the hang of it!  It really can be dramatic as the last rays of the sun appear over the forthcoming mountain silhouette.

"Mysterious Rocky Mountain Sunset" by Karla Nolan framed painting on glass

Well, this is a mysterious art post!  I haven't quite decided what exactly is occurring in the sky of this painting on glass, so decided to "go with the flow, the mystery of it all".  I see many things happening in this sunset and I hope that you do, also.  I see no sense in defining everything that happens with these crazy glass paints!

"Ecstasy" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

One might say that I am ecstatic about sunsets, as shown in the above painting, "Ecstasy".  No two are alike for any day or any amount of time in the day, just a quick, split second in time.  And since I live so close to the Rocky Mountains, the Continental Divide, I love the mountains just below the clouds!
