"Vibrance" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Another Colorado Rocky Mountain sunset, this with particularly vibrant colors, hence the name! This one is big enough, once framed, for a fireplace mantel!  More of my "I Love Colorado!" series.

"Twilight Over the Rocky Mountains" by Karla Nolan, miniature unframed palette knife oil painting

A little gem of a painting, miniature, actually, this is to me the quintessential Rocky Mountain/Colorado sunset.  I have always been struck at how the mountains are a dark silhouette while the remains of the sun and the successive colors over that, then the various blues of the skies are layered.  I love Colorado!

"Ecstasy" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

One might say that I am ecstatic about sunsets, as shown in the above painting, "Ecstasy".  No two are alike for any day or any amount of time in the day, just a quick, split second in time.  And since I live so close to the Rocky Mountains, the Continental Divide, I love the mountains just below the clouds!

"Smoldering Sunset" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

This is seriously one of my all time favorite paintings.  It's basically my back yard at sunset in the winter.  I painted it a while back, lost track of it (yes, that happens in my studio, sadly), found it again recently and was thrilled to see it again.  In fact, I'm almost tempted to not sell it but someone out there needs this for some oomph in his or her life!

"Sunset Waves" by Karla Nolan, 4"x12" unframed palette knife oil painting

There just is nothing much more satisfying than seeing a sunset over the Rocky Mountains here in Colorado.  They are favorites for painting material, of course, and I just never grow weary of them.  You never know what you'll see and it occasionally seems to be raining color!

"Majestic" by Karla Nolan, 4"x12" unframed palette knife oil painting

Having the Rocky Mountains to the west of us makes for some amazing sunsets, especially with the silhouette of the peaks below.  I love the dusks that have just a tinge of blue in them, more pinks, corals, yellows than anything.  I would have to say that they are "majestic"!

"Furioso (Furious)" by Karla Nolan, 4"x12" unframed palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas

This is the sort of sunset I'm used to seeing in the summer evenings here in northern Colorado.  Sometimes it almost seems as if the clouds have their own personalities, whirling about in the atmospheric winds overhead.  Bright, bold colors with blue hues, hints of turquoise, the silhouette of the foothills leading to the Rocky Mountains, the Continental Divide, the backbone of North America.  Am I a lucky girl or what???

"Moon at Midnight" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Yes, I am at it again, another night sky scene.  There is always so much happening in those dark skies, the moon shining, the stars shooting, the hint of a possible storm.  I am most intrigued, as I hope you are, also, by the mystery of the night!

"Searing" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Luckily it hasn't gotten this hot so far this summer -- but you know the kind of day I'm talking about, don't you?  The "you can fry the egg on the sidewalk" sort of day, searing, mind boggling heat.  Not a cloud in the sky.  The living isn't necessarily so easy when you're sweating your way through the day!  Well, for the first time in the 27 years  that we've lived in our sweet Fort Collins, we have air conditioning in our house and, while I'm not in any hurry to use it, it is comforting (no pun intended) to know we have access to cooler temperatures.

"Feroce (Fierce)" by Karla Nolan, 4"x4" unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

This is a fierce sunset, the sort that just glows at you, reminding you that the day has ended, it may have been a tough one, but you carry on, nonetheless.  Or at least that's my take on this painting.  Yup, some days are like that!

"Fuoco (Fire)" by Karla Nolan, 4"x12" unframed palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas

John Denver wrote about the fire in the sky and I've seen it occurring here in Colorado many times over the Rocky Mountains silhouette.  A brilliant red at one point in the sundown, it is surrounded by oranges, yellows, turquoise (if you look hard) and blues and just absolutely captures the emotions.

"Blue Moon" by Karla Nolan, 4"x12" unframed palette knife oil painting

I noticed the other night that we had a full moon.  It was just before our snowstorm struck, yet again delaying Spring.  Weather is rarely dull here in Colorado; wait 20 minutes, it'll change.  Then I started thinking about the "blue moon" -- two full moons in one month.  I have no idea if this is the month for such an occurrence but I am enraptured with painting moonscapes.  They are just so much fun!  Here's one for you....

"Rocky Mountain Sunset: Clouds in Motion" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Well, it's time of year again, amazing northern Colorado sunsets to view.  It's easier with Daylight Savings Time, dinner's finished and I can out my front door and see incredible sights.  The clouds move quickly some evenings and that's inspiring -- can me if you can!

"Orange Spark" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting, colorado, broncos, sunset, rocky mountains

Okay, okay, the Broncos lost.  I'm not a gung-ho football fan by any means, but many relatives and friends who are near and dear to me really did look forward to the Super Bowl and the idea of the Broncos winning.  I know they're disappointed, so this art blog is for them -- there's always next year!  (The lower photo is an example of the artwork framed, please note that it's sold unframed.)

"Colorado Foothills Glow" by Karla Nolan, miniature palette knife oil painting, affordable, rocky mountains

November seems to be the easiest time for me to observe sunsets over the silhouette of the Rocky Mountains.  Maybe it's the time change, moving from "Daylight Savings" to "Mountain Standard" time -- dinner is at 6 pm around here, so that gives me time to run out the front door and observe to the west, over the foothills, what is occurring in the sky.  Am I spoiled or what?  Loving it, lots of inspiration for painting!
