Bangalay Corroboree..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I had Aboriginals in mind when I painted this one. in their language, BANGALAY means Eucalyptus Tree and CORROBOREE means an event/ dance..hence the title..

**** I have since discovered that the language can differ regionally (throughout Australia )and for the species of tree ..

So BANGALAY might be incorrect in a general sense , but for the sake of this painting I will keep the title as is..

Flash Dance..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Believe it or not this one used to be irises. I just labored so long on trying to make them work that I decided to throw in the proverbial towel and start all over.

The surface is a Richeson sanded panel and they take a LOT of torture. LOL.

I held it under a garden hose , blasting most of the iris image away, then let the panel dry.

I used some of the ghost image underneath to allow the fish to evolve. It was tricky, but then I love to complicate things, ha!

I really like the design of this one, and I certainly prefer it to my iris attempt. I hope you like it.

This image is 18" x 24" unframed
$400 plus S/H

Mantled Epoch..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Mantled Epoch is cut from the same paper as the previous post. I am glad I stuck with this set of abstracts, always a little worrying to rely on one's design sense, but I do love that 'angst' in my art.

I began (after I had cut the full sheet in half as with my previous painting) by turning the remaining 'demo' image upside down.

As I worked by blocking in some hefty darks, I rotated every few minutes, and kept doing that till I settled on a pleasing composition.

Just by rotating the piece as I progressed, I saw so many opportunities evolve. Each rotation looked so different, and the focus became a different area of the painting.

I had a hard time, as with my previous post, to finally decide which rotation pleased me the most.
Eventually it was this one.

See the process of my thinking below, remember I had no reference with any of these abstracts, I just 'went with the flow' so to speak (pun intended).

This piece is 13" x 19" unframed
It is a pastel on red Sennelier paper.

$350 plus S/H

Cavernous Tumble..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This painting started as a demo start, only partly done, and I did not want to toss the great paper.

It was a full sheet of reddish  Sennelier paper, which I turned upside down and cut in half so I have two pieces I can work on. (there will be another painting coming up soon from this paper)

I liked the color contrast in the demo, so just went with it.

I wanted to abstract my image (though) and after my France workshop last May and a visit to some amazing caves, I felt this image could be an 'echo' of that .

See all the steps below, to better explain.

This image is 13" x 19.5" unframed

$350 plus S/H

Prints of this image are also available through Fine Art America:

Below is a little on the thoughts behind my process.

As a finished painting the sheet directly below shows the image in all directions. I could still change my mind on this, it's an easy thing to erase my signature and place it elsewhere if I decided to perhaps go with a vertical format, I will have to live with my chosen top image for a few days and see how I feel.

The sheet below is my whole thought process throughout this painting. From an old demo partly done on a full sheet/cut in half/turned upside down/ and then gradually working around the shapes in a new painting.

Above, Below and Beyond..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I decided to pastel over a very banal tree landscape I had done in a quick demo years ago.

I have just attended an abstract workshop and I guess that is still n my mind, even though it was a watercolor workshop.

I needed a break away from pretty landscapes, and this is what I came up with.

Totally intuitive, no preconceived plan.

I did this on Sennelier paper in pastels.

It measures 11.25" x 25.5" unframed

$350 plus S/H

I am also posting my decision planning on the rotation of this design, I was pleased with it in every position actually, but decided on the above.

See what you all think, do you agree?

Shell Design ..Semi Abstract...Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

This is another semi abstract design done in pastels over acrylics.

I simply love this process. I never know the outcome, and these designs are always a challenge to me.

The whole surface is eventually covered in pastels in the form of pastel pencils and the soft variety sticks, after a fluid start with liquid acrylics and water.

I chose this elongated format as an added challenge, this gets me away from the 'expected' and I like the surprise .

The substrate is a white Richeson Sanded Board , which are fast becoming my favorite substrate for this mixed media work.

Original image is 20" x 7.7" (unframed

Mystery...Abstract Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

This was a larger painting on Richeson board and I decided to cut it down and make two from it. This is one half.
I used a white Richeson board and threw my acrylics onto the surface to float and make shapes. Then I dried it and began to assess the 'damage'.

I began with a loose drawing of coconuts and palm fronds, and as the painting progressed it became more and more abstract.
I love it when the painting governs the artist, the hard part is not fighting it in the process and having fun with it.

Delicate Balance...Abstract Design...Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

This one is a pastel over an acrylic underlay, although most of that is hidden with pastels now.

That's the beauty of starting a painting like this, the acrylic gives you an option to go with the patterns the paint has made or not. Pastel is an opaque medium so it is not that hard to diminish the acrylic if you desire.

I mostly use my pastel pencils though, on this Richeson sanded surface. Oh, and yes, I am smudging quite a bit after the pastel is applied, something I rarely do with my pastels. This surface is pretty rough and for these designs I prefer a smoother result.

I hope you like this one.

It is an 8" x 10" unframed piece on foam sanded board.

$150 plus S/H

Frangipani Fantasy..Abstract..Pastel..Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

It's a great day to be in my studio. painting... as it's pouring and sooo cozy!
So this one is exactly what I have been doing all morning, painting!

I began this with a throw of watercolor and inks, to get a loose wash of colors and shapes.

After having been on Maui in the last few weeks, I had some gorgeous photos of Frangipanis (Plumeria) from which to refer. I had my MUSE.

I 'found' a place to get my FRANGIPANI situated, the rest is basically made up to adjust to the shapes the first throw made.

I paint like this all the time in watercolors, and although the technique is a little scary to some artists, I find it comforting to have no clue as to where the painting will end.

It truly makes the artist think about design and BALANCE.

This is on UArt sanded paper, not a bad surface, but for me, not as fun (yet) to work on as the Richeson sanded surface boards. They are still my favorites.

This image is for sale.

$130 including S/H within the contiguous USA.

It measures 7.25" x 10" and is on a 0 .25" thick archival piece of foamcore.

Suspended In Blues..Pastel over Acrylics..Abstract..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I'm Back!!!! So sorry for my absence.. I have been tripping around, and just got home from Maui and a vacation with my dearest painting buddies.
Great fun and lots of Chi Chi's for some of the girls, whom i will not name !!!  Hee hee.

So this is a small addition to my abstract pastels I had been doing a while back.
I love doing these ones, so to break back into painting again I thought I would hop into this series again for a while..

SUSPENDED IN BLUES  began with free flowing inks on a pastel surface.
I then  made these wonderful bell shaped flowers come into focus with negative painting and pastel overlays.

I had photos of these flowers from Maui. Have no idea what they are called, and I have stretched the realism a lot to fit with my design, so I will forgive you for not identifying them.I do know they supposedly are poisonous and bloom at night.. or that is what I have been told.

This image is a 6" x 9" image and can be yours for $125 plus S/H !!

Okay this is all for today, it's time for a vino break.. :)))

Lava Dance...Abstract.. Pastel over Liquid Acrylics.. Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

LAVA DANCE  is reminiscent of the Maui volcano flows. To watch the real thing is absolutely beautiful! But very scary and awesome (not to mention, smelly!

The pastel medium is a wonderfully pure medium for color, and over the liquid acrylics, I am loving the interaction of these two mediums.

The support is gatorboard and this one is a fairly deep rust color to begin with. I had to really push my contrast color on this, to make it have impact.

I worked mainly in the reds and its analagous colors with the lime green compliment, and a touch of blue to make it 'pop'.

                                                         Image size is 5.5" x 7.5" (unframed)

$150 inc. S/H within the contiguous USA.

Scorcerer's Delight..Abstract.. watercolor and Liquid Acrylics...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I was enthused to finish this painting which began as a demonstration in my workshop yesterday. Thank you to all my wonderful students, your work yesterday made me very proud to see.

The workshop was TOTALLY ABSTRACT  and just following our intuition, what fun!

This image is in watercolor and liquid acrylics, a great combination for this type of work.
This painting is presented unframed, and matted ready for framing.

                                                    Image size is 12" x 11"

$250 inc. S/H within mainland USA.

Coastal Interlace...Abstract... Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

COASTAL INTERLACE  is a slightly larger abstract image than the previous ones I have posted.

In going to a bigger format, I had to really concentrate on CONNECTION and make the top half of the painting still be a part of the lower areas.

The board on which this is painted is a RICHESON sanded board. I had a failed landscape on this and did not want to toss the good board. Another reason for using these VERY FORGIVING surfaces. i am fast falling in love with them.

I simply washed it down and scrubbed away with an old brush moving the old pastels around. It did not remove all the landscape, however when it dried, I partially pre - wet again in places, and droozled (love that word) my LIQUID ACRYLICS  over areas..I waited till it dried, some patterns were there for me to enhance, some others I needed to totally make up.

I had to gradually cover my surface with pastels. The underneath acrylics just glowed with the pastel overlay.
As with all these abstracts, it could be turned in all directions, some better than others.
I had to think long and hard in finding the best way to look at the image.

I also spent a lot longer (than my previous smaller abstracts)  painting this one today; perhaps the size,  however I truly had to think on all the design elements with this one. I am happy with it, I hope you also like it..
Time for wine!

Image size of this one is 11" x 14" (unframed)

Blue Concerto..Abstract.. Pastel over Liquid Acrylics..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Having recently played with the Richeson sanded boards, liquid acrylics and pastel overlays,  I thought I would continue with this image in the same vein..

As mentioned before with my previous post, these boards will allow a lot of mixed media under painting, and the way the colors of the pastel overlays GLOW is magical!

I so wish more pastel societies would allow ABSTRACT imagery in their competitions, in actual fact, these are way more difficult (in this artist's humble opinion), than a traditional landscape image.

Image size (unframed)
6" x 9"
This image comes presented matted and ready for framing.

Playground Escape...Abstract.. Watercolor and Liquid Acrylics..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This is another fun ABSTRACT in watercolors and liquid acrylics on watercolor paper.
I pass a play gym every day when I walk my dogs in the park, and the colors are always such fun.. All those angles are very eye catching to me as an artist.
It goes to show the many ways an artist can be inspired huh?

Jazz Session...Abstract... Watercolor and Liquid Acrylic...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

JAZZ SESSION  was a fun one to paint for me. I love color, and the painting just seemed to remind me of a jazz bar I frequented as a teenager in Sydney back in the late 1960's and early 1970's called Red Ned's.

This image was not planned out at all, and the music notes and part of a guitar came out of the paint.I love doing these sort of jigsaw puzzle paintings.
