Mystery...Abstract Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

This was a larger painting on Richeson board and I decided to cut it down and make two from it. This is one half.
I used a white Richeson board and threw my acrylics onto the surface to float and make shapes. Then I dried it and began to assess the 'damage'.

I began with a loose drawing of coconuts and palm fronds, and as the painting progressed it became more and more abstract.
I love it when the painting governs the artist, the hard part is not fighting it in the process and having fun with it.

This image is 8.75" x 20" unframed
$150 plus S/H

Whirling Dervish.Semi-Abstract......Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I began this with a pour of watercolor and acrylics on an Ampersand board.
At the time of the pour, I had no idea what I wanted to paint, so I decided to just play with the liquid media.

When it naturally dried, I began to wade through my photos, and decided to use KOI as my muse having watched and photographed tons of these fish on Maui on my last trip there.

I used my pastel pencil to draw the shapes into the painted areas, and then proceeded to overlay my pastels to retrieve the fish.

This is a large painting, 24" x 36" and is unframed. I hope you like it..

$500 Plus S/H ( contiguous USA. only).

Floral Fanfare..Watercolor abstract.. Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

Happy New Year everyone! I am trying to get back in the proverbial groove again, and have spent the day in my very neglected studio at last.

How much better than to ring in the New Year painting huh?

This image is all about play and I guess I still have fireworks on my mind or in my ears! :))

I am going to try to do a few more still life florals in this loose watercolor way for you. I hope you enjoy them.

This image is unframed and 12" x 16".

Coconut Shadows..Semi Abstract..Pastel.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Believe it or not this used to be horses. I decided I could do better, so I wiped it with alcohol and a rag and then splashed acrylics over the surface. The surface is a large Ampersand board by the way.

After my surface had dried, I worked my image into and over the marks, quite a challenge, but I think by now you all know how I love to challenge myself.

The photo reference was one I took on my recent trip to Maui.

This was great fun to do, although it took a while.

The size of this one is 24" x 36" unframed on board.

$450 plus S/H

Dalliance...Abstract..Pastel and Acrylic Inks...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

Another small abstract..

This one is done with pastels over inks.. I had no idea what this paper was, but I mounted it onto the archival foamcore and away I went.

It had no tooth whatsoever, and I am glad I have no more of it. :((

As a result I stuck to small format images. Next time I will wear my glasses when selecting my papers..Ha!

The piece is inspired by a visiting dragon fly which comes to my backyard on a regular basis, it's quite stunning shimmering in the sun.

This image is for sale at $75..
Free S/H within the contiguous USA.
Image size is 4.25" x 7.5" unframed.

Source...Abstract...Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

I walk daily with my dogs, and the area I walk is very lovely, full of trees.. I have seen the remnants of a wonderful old tree continually on my walks, it's  really just a stump with exposed roots, but to an artist, it is lovely. To anyone else, probably it's just good firewood. :((

So today I decided to give you all my 'impression' of what I see daily.

Of course with my penchant for COLOR and MOVEMENT , you are sure to realize my image is wildly embellished .

This is a 5" x 10" pastel on gatorboard (unframed).

Neon Damsels..SOLD!...Abstracted Landscape...Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

NEON DAMSELS began with a wash of bright magenta and orange liquid acrylic over a textured board..

When dry, I then began to superimpose my tree forms over this with willow charcoal.

With pastel pencils I first enhanced and subdued some of the colors before going in with a touch of soft pastels, feeling my way so to speak.

I did not like the texture the soft pastels made, so I used a brush loaded with water and flattened areas out, see the bottom trees and shrub areas and foliage.

I had a hard time making fine linear marks with my pastels. Even my pastel pencils are not fine enough, so I used a fine rigger brush dipped in watercolor, and made the branches.

Some final pastel touches were gently integrated over the watercolor and I was happy.

This image is an 8" x 10" unframed pastel on gatorboard.

This image is SOLD!

Golden Splendor..Landscape, Semi Abstracted..Pastel......Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

I began this one with a very bright random coverage of MAGENTA liquid acrylic on a TEXTURED board.
When this had dried, I drew a simple landscape and worked my pastels over the top of the magenta.
I like the bounce of colors in this one. It is almost completely covered with pastels, the acrylic is just a start.
More to come, hope you like it.

Zig Zag Shadows...Abstract Landscape...Acrylic...Texas artist...Rae Andrews

This one is another in what seems to be becoming a series of URBAN LIFE.

I am still working on these textured boards, which are a lot of fun with the acrylics.
I plan all of these with bits and pieces from my photos, a composite..

I work the whole thing on my IPad first, to get ideas of colors and designs.

Lava Dance...Abstract.. Pastel over Liquid Acrylics.. Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

LAVA DANCE  is reminiscent of the Maui volcano flows. To watch the real thing is absolutely beautiful! But very scary and awesome (not to mention, smelly!

The pastel medium is a wonderfully pure medium for color, and over the liquid acrylics, I am loving the interaction of these two mediums.

The support is gatorboard and this one is a fairly deep rust color to begin with. I had to really push my contrast color on this, to make it have impact.

I worked mainly in the reds and its analagous colors with the lime green compliment, and a touch of blue to make it 'pop'.

                                                         Image size is 5.5" x 7.5" (unframed)

Descent.........Abstract...Acrylic on Canvas.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

DESCENT  was a part of a solo show I had here in Texas this year. It SOLD to a client in Houston.

I used the panelled background in this semi abstracted piece as well.. As I said, this way of painting is a favorite of mine. I love using that GEOMETRY and DIVISIONAL sectioning in a more NATURAL setting.
For me, it disturbs the eye, and gives the viewer a different perspective on a scene.
I have had clients say to me "What is that panel. why is that there ?" my answer, "I don't know", it just "felt right".

For whatever reason, it works for me, and I will likely continue to paint images with these panels. I hope you enjoy.

Coastal Interlace...Abstract... Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

COASTAL INTERLACE  is a slightly larger abstract image than the previous ones I have posted.

In going to a bigger format, I had to really concentrate on CONNECTION and make the top half of the painting still be a part of the lower areas.

The board on which this is painted is a RICHESON sanded board. I had a failed landscape on this and did not want to toss the good board. Another reason for using these VERY FORGIVING surfaces. i am fast falling in love with them.

I simply washed it down and scrubbed away with an old brush moving the old pastels around. It did not remove all the landscape, however when it dried, I partially pre - wet again in places, and droozled (love that word) my LIQUID ACRYLICS  over areas..I waited till it dried, some patterns were there for me to enhance, some others I needed to totally make up.

I had to gradually cover my surface with pastels. The underneath acrylics just glowed with the pastel overlay.
As with all these abstracts, it could be turned in all directions, some better than others.
I had to think long and hard in finding the best way to look at the image.

I also spent a lot longer (than my previous smaller abstracts)  painting this one today; perhaps the size,  however I truly had to think on all the design elements with this one. I am happy with it, I hope you also like it..
Time for wine!

Image size of this one is 11" x 14" (unframed)

Blue Concerto..Abstract.. Pastel over Liquid Acrylics..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Having recently played with the Richeson sanded boards, liquid acrylics and pastel overlays,  I thought I would continue with this image in the same vein..

As mentioned before with my previous post, these boards will allow a lot of mixed media under painting, and the way the colors of the pastel overlays GLOW is magical!

I so wish more pastel societies would allow ABSTRACT imagery in their competitions, in actual fact, these are way more difficult (in this artist's humble opinion), than a traditional landscape image.

Image size (unframed)
6" x 9"
This image comes presented matted and ready for framing.

Netted...Abstract Watercolor and Acrylic...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

NETTED   was done a long time ago for an Australian Artist magazine article.
The article was a showcase of my art and they wanted a STEP by STEP  demonstration to take up a couple of pages.

I actually loved doing this demo, it was in watercolors and acrylics, and I used the    patterns within the image to augment MOVEMENT.

At the time I painted this, (1999) I was well into DIVISIONAL  backgrounds, as you will see. They still work though, even today and at times, I still use that technique.

It's great to take a step back in time sometimes, and see what you were producing as an artist. In those days I lived on Maui, so most of my art had a TROPICAL  flavor .                                           .

The image size is 23.5" x 18" and it is unframed
