Shadow Dance..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Another unframed pastel close focus of eucalyptus leaves.

I am loving this process of overlaying an abstraction of colors over the subject. I do this in my app Sketch Club on my IPad.

It gets me out of the ‘color doldrums’ and can totally surprise the eye..

This one is a pastel on Sennelier La Cate sanded paper..
It measures 14.5” x 19.4” unframed.
$350 plus S/H

Prints of this image are also available through Fine Art America.

Carnival..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is on a full sheet of Sennelier La Carte paper..

I like to take my reference to a more abstract interpretation, and this one was so much fun to work with. The palm is in my backyard, and of course, the colors are all made up.

19.5” x 25” ( unframed)
Pastel on sanded paper
$500 plus S/H

This image is also available as a print through my Fine Art America Print Site.

Bangalay Corroboree..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I had Aboriginals in mind when I painted this one. in their language, BANGALAY means Eucalyptus Tree and CORROBOREE means an event/ dance..hence the title..

**** I have since discovered that the language can differ regionally (throughout Australia )and for the species of tree ..

So BANGALAY might be incorrect in a general sense , but for the sake of this painting I will keep the title as is..

Old Timer..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I completed this one just now. Still loving these Crescent Boards.. They seem to suit my style of painting.

I love these old lamps as well, such great studies for the artist. We used to have one as kids when my Mother and Father took us camping. Such happy memories.

This image is 15' x 20' x 0.25"
It is presented unframed
$400 plus S/H

Chicken Hop..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This watercolor was fun to paint.. I threw a few colors onto a Crescent Watercolor Panel and waited till it dried.
I then referred  to my photos of chickens a roosters, and began to find areas I could place them.

My intention was not to be literal, merely lost and found. A surprise so to speak.

This original watercolor is presented unframed.

Captured Glory..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I just finished this one today.. loving these Crescent Watercolor Boards.
I stumbled on them a couple of weeks ago and have not looked back since.

The surface is Cold Pressed, and the panel is a rigid support.. so when framing it, one coul even omit having to use foam core onto which to mount the painting.

They come in quite a few sizes too which I like.

Captured Glory is available ..
$450 plus S/H
15” x 20”

Prints of this image are available through Fine Art America.

Chain Reaction..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Chain Reaction is a pastel on Sennelier paper.
Image size is 15.5" x 19.5" unframed

$450 plus S/H

I did quite a lot of reconstruction on the links from my initial drawing as in my photo it was not clear enough to follow. I made the water up and the wharf, both of which were not visible in my photo, which incidentally was a chain I saw on Maui in the Maalaea Harbor.

I also turned this one every which way during my process, and finally decided to make it a horizontal format.

Flash Dance..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Believe it or not this one used to be irises. I just labored so long on trying to make them work that I decided to throw in the proverbial towel and start all over.

The surface is a Richeson sanded panel and they take a LOT of torture. LOL.

I held it under a garden hose , blasting most of the iris image away, then let the panel dry.

I used some of the ghost image underneath to allow the fish to evolve. It was tricky, but then I love to complicate things, ha!

I really like the design of this one, and I certainly prefer it to my iris attempt. I hope you like it.

Of Corpus Contrasts..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I just finished this one in my cozy studio while the sleet falls outside and the temperatures drop..

Brr... it's cold today. A great day to be painting!

This one is on an Ampersand Pastelboard.

I usually stay away from this kind of support as I prefer one with more 'tooth' to it for my pastels. However, this one worked pretty well for me, so I am glad I persevered.

Tidepool Interrupted..Pastel..Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

I love to watch water move, whether it's a waterfall,  a pond or pool with a slight rippling effect. It's all mesmerizing to me and very peaceful.

I tried to capture that feeling with this one. That action of looking down into a rock pool when a ripple breaks the surface with such wonderful patterns.

I hope you like this one, it was a fun one to paint.

Like Music Adrift..Pastel..Rae Andrews

Hi again, I am finally able to get back to a post on this blog. My hubby has been in hospital yet again, and my life is just very scattered right now, so no time for painting. Grrr!

I started this one about three days ago. It is a 19.5" x 25.5" pastel on red Sennelier sanded paper (unframed). This one was cathartic for me, with all the stress over the last few months. Just to paint again has been a real treat!

I love to paint water in any form as you may realize, and this rock pool (without the shells) was on Maui . I again 'sparked up my colors using Photoshop on my photo.
I used my own shell collection to pop in a little more interest.

I hope you like it. It was a fun image to paint.

$450 plus S/H

Ethereal Dance..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I think if I were to describe my technique in any medium I use, on the whole, it would be OVERLAPPING and LAYERING .

With pastels this is, at times difficult, as it's an opaque medium; however one just has to use a light touch to get those underneath nuances to show through.

I began this with a totally abstract colorful start. I did not know what I would end up with. I just went with the flow.

The substrate is a red earth colored Sennelier paper.

I began with this..

I switched the image around in several directions, and kept doing that as the image progressed.

I have a large shell collection and thought I would go with that as a subject.

Over the top of my abstract beginnings, I drew some of my shells to intersect and overlap.
Now the fun begins!

I like to work in a  NEGATIVE PINTING  technique with most all of my work, and the shells developed in much the same way.

Don't let anyone ever tell you that ABSTRACTS are easy, ("my child could do better"..
Now where have I heard this before?

In fact, I think ABSTRACTS are the hardest .

The artist must rely on their sense of design and truly immerse themselves from the heart.

I hope you like how this one turned out.

Neptune’s Court..Watermedia..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

NEPTUNE'S COURT began in a recent abstract workshop I took with Mary Ann Beckwith.

Lots of paint flying everywhere, textures and creativity.

I had just a big sheet of this Yupo (manufactured paper) covered in implied textures, very pretty, but now what?

The paint always GLOWS on Yupo, and yes, this is mostly WATERCOLOR with some acrylic GESSO over parts, NO INK is used, although I bet some of you thought I had used INK..
Anyway....

I love a challenge.

Pretty as my start was with patterns made by stamping objects or cloth into and over paint, I feel we as artists, should not rely on that alone. It's a trap.. and many artists deem a painting finished before they truly have done much of their own 'pulling together'.

The challenge is making A PAINTING out of all of this lusciousness.

For days now I have gone back and forth with this, breaking objects into the patterns I made, losing and diminishing the importance of my implied textures, to make my AQUATIC shapes evolve.

It takes a LOT of thought, and I constantly turned this around to show all angles before I decided on this vertical format. The painting actually works okay with most angles though.

I hope you like my result.

Chasm Interruped..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I am on a roll with these abstracts now, hope you are not sick of them.
This one was a challenge..

As you will see from the step by step page below, it began as a full sheet of Sennelier paper on which I had done a quick demo for an art group years ago.

I am going through all my old filed paintings and reconstructing them. I hate to waste this wonderful substrate.

So...  I first turned the old demo upside down before deciding to cut the paper in half vertically.

I find if I view an old image upside down first it changes my perspective on that piece, and I begin to see possibilities for another painting.

This one, as with my previous posts, changed a great deal throughout the process of painting it. I could easily have gone with a horizontal format, but in the end, decided on this vertical.
I am constantly rotating the work as I paint.
