Currently hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas, this contemporary floral landscape painting is getting framed up for the holidays.  The patches of flowers in the foreground were put in with a palette knife.  I used some impasto in the paint to give it more body and texture.  There was some scraping, pushing and pulling on the surface of the panel giving the painting interest and depth.  Contact Kay for more information on this painting.  Thanks, Kay

I love to paint on a large surface.  It is liberating to make big wide brushstrokes with a brush or apply loads of paint with a palette knife.  A 60" x 36" canvas is fun, challenging and my image/subject matter is always changing....as you can see below I did stop and take some pics along my painting journey.  

First, I had an idea in my head and thought that I would sketch it out with charcoal on the canvas.  Then I scrubbed in some colors.  And more colors.  Finally getting the white canvas covered up. 

I wanted my color palette to be in cool lavenders and greys....and some greens.  I got off-track as you can see in the fifth photo.  I cut loose with some oranges, reds, and blues.  The next day when I came into the studio, I realized that I had gotten de-railed.  So I spent more than two hours mixing wonderful purples. magentas, greens, and greys to bring the colors back to my original plan.  Of course I used huge amounts of oils and there is texture and depth to this painting.

Pushing, pulling, scraping and laying in the oils with my palette knife gives this painting an impressionistic feeling.  I started with an underpainting using a brush.  After looking at it for a couple of months on my easel, I decided I needed to take a different approach and repainted it with the knife.  I am much more satisfied with the outcome, especially with the color relationships.  The burnt orange contrasting against the violet and greens makes it pop. The colors of the landscape remind me of how a hot and dry summer day feels....therefore, the name, "Color of Summer".  I can't wait to put a frame on this panel once I varnish it.  This painting will be for sale once it dries.  Contact ME for purchasing info.  Thanks, Kay

Contemporary Palette Knife Painting

Yesterday was the Artists' Reception at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas for the "It's A Small World" exhibit.  There was a great turn-out, and this painting, "Afternoon Delight" took third place in the jurying.  (A total surprise for me, since I haven't won anything in a long time!!!)  Judges were Steve Hahn and Ellie Taylor, both fabulous artists.  Here is a pic of gallery owner Pam Massar, Ellie, Steve and I with my framed painting.

It was so much fun to meet some new collectors and artists throughout the afternoon.  It was especially fun to have friend Gwen Bell take second place and studio partner Sharon Hodges take first place in the judging.

This painting is drying at the studio.  I have two layers of paint on the panel, then lots of palette knife work.  I used impasto to get some texture on the smooth canvas.  The photograph may not show, but the clouds are thick, broad strokes of oils with the knife.  I will get this framed once it is dry...it needs to sit right now so that the paint won't get smudged up.  Feel free to contact ME for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking, Kay

This is small landscape painting was painted with a flat brush and with thick oils.  The painting has depth, and you can follow the path into the field, back to the horizon.  I want the viewer to feel as if he or she is looking out into the spacious landscape, looking at the beautiful vista.

I was back in the studio yesterday, and got my palette knife out and created this painting.  The paint is layered on the panel, giving it texture and depth.  I moved the paint around quite a bit once it was on the panel.  The horizon line was changed numerous times...I wanted it to fade into the background, and needed to mix my oils over and over to get a hazy far-away look. Yesterday, when I was at the Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas I was talking to a couple who admired this painting.  I said that it was a part of of a series that I have been work on - Floral Landscapes.  They thought it was an abstract with roosters in it.  So if that is what they see in this painting, it is an abstract rooster painting.  I see patches of color indicating wildflowers popping up in the landscape.  If you let your imagination run wild you could probably see something other than roosters or flowers.  I used alot of impasto, palette knives, brushes and cut-away tools with the oils on this painting.  Lots of texture.  Anyway, the reception for the juried art show, Pursuit of the Southwest was good.  Lots of people attended, and there were four or five paintings sold through out the day.  Thanks for looking at this blog....contact Kay for more info.  Kay
