This painting started as a warm up exercise. I painted over a painting I was not happy with and did this with very heavy strokes of paint on my brush and palette knife. I really like the mood of this piece as it reflects the warm glowing light I found in the scene that I photographed in Santa Fe many years ago. I have always wanted to paint this scene and don't know why the photo sat in a box for so long before I decided to paint it. As the photo was taken pre-digital it shows how long I have had it laying around!

It was a hot summer day, 35 C hot, and we could hardly wait for cool of the night. I started painting around midnight.

Spring in the Rockies

This painting is on hold until mid June when I will find out if it has been juried into the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibition later this year.

I haven't entered this prestigeous show for several years because one of the requirements is that the painting be on paper.  That means glass, matting and framing too.  Much more of a hassle than painting on canvas.

For the colorful sign in front of my house :)
Well, it is so cold that I can't open the door of my garage for days now, ergo, I can't drive my car and I am stuck within the range of the railroad or my legs. Thank God that I have the grocery store just across the street.
So, I have time to use my creativity with the things I have in my house. We didn't need this old satellite dish anymore and I stashed it in my atelier for later use. Today, I decided to make a painting on it and when the weather gets a little better, I will nail it in front of my house as a sign that an artist lives inside ;)

"BURNISHED" 12006, acrylic copper geologic abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Burnished

This geologic abstract has a mat that I painted with two shades of copper acrylic.  Since there is copper and gold paint in the painting, I thought it really enhanced the work.

The bevel on the mat was white.  I painted the bevel black and let the paint smudge out on to the mat a bit. It looks very much like the mat is made from copper metal.

This is another painting resulting from my experiments with yupo paper.  Here the background is resist of gloss medium on yupo.  The gloss medium makes the fluid acrylic paint do funny things.  I love the unpredictability of it.
