Wheat Fields by Kay Wyne

Wheat Fields
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
A big sky with fast moving clouds and a colorful wheat field is my subject matter for this canvas.  Using a wide flat brush I built up the paint on the clouds, giving them some shape and movement.  The tall grass has reflections of the sky painted in it.  This painting has been excepted into the Master's of the Fall Juried Art Exhibit at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas.  Contact the gallery for more information.  Thanks, Kay Wyne

Tight Bunch by Kay Wyne

Tight Bunch
20" x 20" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
I picked up a couple of bunches of hydrangeas at Trader Joe's this week and set up a simple still life.  We were hosting Karen Blair - contemporary artist from Virginia, at the studio and this floral arrangement came in handy, as almost all the artists painted it.  I chose not to use any medium on this painting because I wanted a thick painterly look on the canvas.  It will take a long time for the oils to dry!  Here is a close-up:
Thanks for taking a peak at this painting.  "Tight Bunch" is drying at the studio, but will be looking for a new home in the near future.  Thanks, Kay

Blue Vase by Kay Wyne

Blue Vase
8" x 8" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life
I just finished this painting in the studio yesterday.  I had started it months ago, and put it away for a while.  I was in the mood to put some finishing touches on it, sign it and photograph it.  I love the shape and color of the vase, and the variety of shapes and colors in the floral arrangement.  It's very abstract...it's obvious that I used a flat brush by the strokes of paint on the canvas.  I pulled the arrangement out of my head, using my imagination and had a good time painting this one, even though it took a while to complete the job!  I hope this painting makes you smile.  Thanks for looking at my art....Kay

On My Easel....by Kay Wyne

Sitting on my easel...
I started this diptych yesterday.  It's a new canvas size for me, each canvas is 48" x 24", so it's as if I am painting on a 48" x 48" canvas.  I started with a couple of layers of acrylic light grey/blue to cover-up the white canvas.   Using charcoal, I sketched in my horizon line and some large shapes.  Then I looked at my palette of oils and started using up what was leftover from the last painting, and added a few piles of color.  I did not get to work on the upper third of the canvas, but will start on that first thing today.  I plan on going very abstract with it.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay Wyne

Busy Busy by Kay Wyne

Busy Busy
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
Layers of grey blues covered the canvas in the beginning, then I applied fresh color with the palette knife, scraping it back.  After several sessions with this canvas I pulled out a wide brush and some oil sticks drawing in lines and shapes.  That gave the painting movement on the canvas, adding interest and depth.   I pushed and pulled the paint around, moving it until I was satisfied.  Once I stood back from my easel I could see that the corals, pinks and oranges gave it energy.  The blues, greens and turquoise are cooler and give the painting balance along with a variety of lines, brush strokes, palette knife.  There are hints of yellow and creamy yellow in the painting....hidden under the layers.  The sides of the canvas are painted in the grey-blue color, and framing is optional.  Ready to have a new home, BUSY BUSY will be dry and varnished, ready for purchase soon.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information.  Thanks, KMW

Quiet Time by Kay Wyne

Quiet Time
8" x 8" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
Using a brush and palette knife to move the paint around, this small abstract is painted on a gallery wrap canvas.  I started with greys, blues, soft greens and a fleshy-orange color.  The palette knife helped me scrape the canvas several times.  The caribbean blue and rose pinks were added to give it some pop and interest.  The sides of the canvas are painted in the grey-blue background color, and signed on the side.  This painting is drying in the studio, and is for purchase.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this abstract painting.  Thanks for looking....Kay

Double Trouble - Abstract Diptych by Kay Wyne

Double Trouble
NFS
40" x 30"  Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
(Diptych size:  40" x 60")
I have finished Double Trouble!  This contemporary abstract was created to hang as one large piece, measuring 40" x 60", plus any wall space that might be in-between the two canvases.  With this commission, I concentrated on the color palette, and once I established my colors, put some shapes and movement on the canvas.  I used a large palette knife to apply the layers of oil colors.  The soft colors over-lap and blend into each other.  There is some texture on the surface, and you can see some choppy knife marks in the paint.  I did use impasto to get some body into the oil paints.  This painting is drying...and ready to hang!  Thanks for looking at this blog and the art posted.  Have a creative day.  Kay

Jump-Start by Kay Wyne

Jump-Start
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
I was in a blue mood....I pulled out my blues in tubes and oil sticks and made a sample color chart.  Then I picked the blues I thought would be great on this canvas, and mixed a lot of them.  Here is pic of the blue hues that I had at the studio....probably more than I really need.  But after years of painting, I have collected some great blues.  Probably my top three colors are:
  • 1  Richeson Ice Blue
  • 2  Classic Cobalt
  • 3  Charvin Linen Flower

More blue paintings to come...Thanks for looking at Jump-Start!  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing information.  Have an artful day...Kay

Untitled Commission by Kay Wyne

Commission - Untitled
Sold
40" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This was a fun piece as I was able to work with the collector from start to finish.  It was a great experience, and I was thrilled to have this contemporary landscape painting go to a new home in Texas. I was focusing on the soft color palette, especially the spa greens and grey blues, with hints and shades of peachy-oranges, naples yellow, soft lavenders and turquoise blues.  I started with a base coat of grey and then took a large filbert brush and sketched out the shapes.  Using my palette knife, I applied layers and layers of oils.  I put a fan on it every night to help the drying process.  I hope that the viewer can stand in front of this painting and get a pleasant and positive feeling from this palette knife painting.  I am going to let the new owner title this contemporary landscape painting, so for now it is "Untitled".  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay Wyne

Anticipation by Kay Wyne

Anticipation
40" x 40" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Landscape Painting
Layers of color and texture make Anticipation a painting with depth and interest. The palette knife was used to mix my piles of paint, and the apply it on the canvas.  Bold colors over-lap.  Shapes formed to make patches of colorful patches of flowers in this landscape.  Here are a couple of close-ups of the canvas....
My favorite colors to mix right now are the pinks, corals and tangerines.  Thanks for looking at this painting and blog...Have an artful day!  Contact Kay for more information on this contemporary landscape.  KMW

Whirlwind by Kay Wyne

Whirlwind
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract
I started this abstract several months ago, and got to a point where I did not know what to do.  This had originally started out as a floral landscape, but that changed very quickly. I had some lavenders, grey and greens mixed on my palette and took the palette knife to it.  There is texture on the canvas because I used impasto to expedite the drying time.  And, there is movement on the canvas, which keeps the eye moving around the canvas.  I felt like the rotation movement looked like a whirlwind or the inside of a funnel cloud.  Kind of fast and impulsive.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Have an artful day...Kay

Twister by Kay Wyne

Twister
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract
I was thinking of all the severe weather we are having in Texas when I named this contemporary abstract.  The current weather situation of flooding and high winds have left a path of destruction.  On my canvas, the eye of the storm on the canvas is swirling, as if I am looking at a tornado from an aerial view.  The muddy greys and violets are mixed in with the olive greens...it's not my usual color palette.  You can see the wide swipes or strokes that I took with the palette knife, leaving some texture on the canvas.  This painting is drying in the studio...Contact ME for more information on this painting.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

Blaze by Kay Wyne

Blaze
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
It is finished!  I wish I had photos of the progression of this painting.  It has gone through lots of phases.  I worked with oil bars, tubes of oils, after starting with a base coat of turquoise in acrylic.  I used a wide brush throughout most of the painting, along with a palette knife and impasto to give the paint body and texture.
Here's a close-up.
You can see the layers of color and the texture on the canvas.
I purposely signed the canvas on the sides ---
as I could not decide if this painting
looked better horizontal or vertical.  So when this painting goes to a new home,
the owner can decide which way to hang.
I am working on a couple of new abstracts in the studio, but they are in the beginning stages.  Thanks for looking at this blog.  Contact ME for purchasing information.  KMW

Go With The Flow by Kay Wyne

Go With The Flow
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
(I may need to adjust the color as it is somewhat lighter as I
look at the painting and compare it to the photo.
Or, it could be my computer.)
This palette knife painting is drying on my easel in the studio.  I put the title, "Go With The Flow" on it because as I layered the oils and moved the paint on the canvas it was obvious that I need to go with the flow, and let it happen.
This is a close-up of the palette knife work....layers of color, leaving knife edges and forming shapes.  Lots of fracturing going on, and some texture.  But the neatest part of the painting is the color.  The colors are beautiful, and they flow very well from one grey to a violet to a magenta to a red to an orange and then the neutrals.  There are some punches of turqoise and blue in there.  I mixed piles and piles of oils on my palette as I made my way through this painting.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks, KMW
