"Nature in the Abstract", a guidebook for painting abstract and contemporary paintings

"Mission Gardens Abstract", acrylic on paper (cropped)

15" x 22", acrylic on paper

Have you wanted to paint in a more contemporary approach, "paint looser", and explore abstract painting?

The book  Nature in the Abstract    is a newly released, step-by-step guidebook for painting abstracts in acrylic paints, inspired by nature. Written by a Signature Artist member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters.

It can be difficult to view a garden, a landscape or a pond scene and know how to create an abstract painting based on those subjects.  In the book, ideas for abstract paintings inspired by nature are discussed and detailed, and the results are not only a beautiful painting (the painting above is from the chapter "Abstract Patterns from a Garden"),  a method is learned to use on similar subjects.

Creativity and painting skills grow with each chapter.  Are you in a painting rut, or stuck, creatively?  There's a painting project to become "unstuck"!  Acrylic is a great painting medium for exploration.

The short description for "Nature in the Abstract":   a guidebook for learning to recognize shapes and patterns from nature, learning how to abstract those, and transfer the ideas to paint. Finishing, enhancing paintings and truly "seeing" your painting when finished or while in progress is discussed in detail.

An 11-page preview of the book including table of contents and select sample pages is available:

"Nature in the Abstract", a guidebook for painting in acrylic, includes great techniques!

all 22" x 30", acrylic on paper

all paintings are sold (prints available)

My book Nature in the Abstract   started from a stack of notes that I kept in a folder, of class handouts for the acrylic painting classes I instruct.  The description for the book is:  "inspirations and techniques for painting in acrylic and mixed media; a step-by-step guidebook for recognizing and painting abstracts inspired by nature".

The most eye-opening topics for students in my classes and workshops are the acrylic techniques . . . I hear a lot of "you can do that?!" For painters, knowledge of the techniques gives you the full flexibility of painting with acrylic.

The key to painting with acrylic are the techniques used in softening edges, as the paint can dry very quickly. Have you had the experience that you can recognize an acrylic painting immediately? Or found in painting with acrylic that it can quickly dry on you, that your paintings can have sharp edges and a 'plasticky' quality. It's easy to get beyond this stage, and find the joy!  In this book I emphasize techniques in how to achieve both hard and soft edges, painting for depth and richness, and taking advantage of layering.  Written by a Signature Artist member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters.

"Acquarela", abstract acrylic painting by Lynne Cunningham

"Acquarela", acrylic on panel

12" x 16"

May, 2014

I love working with acrylic, especially when the subject is water!  There are so many variables that happen while painting with acrylic; it's amazing painting fun to just go with it and experience the spontaneous effects. This painting had no reference photo, it's made up out of my imagination.

Much is happening in the month of May!  Add your name to the email list for updates on exhibits, my artist news and events.

Love to "play" with acrylic paints and especially now that warmer weather is here - it helps the painting process by drying quickly.  This painting developed with no plan or design in mind, I began this by blocking in color.  Then I worked on texture and adding color notes, and then more surface texture!  In the finish, a bold and graphic abstract painting with a color statement.

"A Collage of Pears", abstract mixed media, acrylic painting by Lynne Cunningham

"A Collage of Pears" , mixed media / acrylic on paper

15" x 17"

$250.00   available

April, 2014

This mixed-media and acrylic painting is a unique process for me .  I used an image transfer process and then collaged on different textures of paper.  The different pieces of paper were painted with a painting knife, so the painting has a feeling of spontaneity, with some references to reality in the form of the pears!

Pears are of such beautiful shapes and colors . . . so fun to see this completed.

This painting is planned to be shown (along with many others) in an outdoor garden show, in the San Francisco Bay Area in mid-May.  It's available here now - shipped unmatted, with a protective backing board, wrapped in plastic.  It's painted to the edges so this artwork can be float-framed under glass or plexi.
Shipping is to the continental states in the U.S.A and Canada.  For shipping elsewhere, questions or comments, please contact me:

"Wave Action", a watery abstract painting by Lynne Cunningham

"Wave Action", acrylic and oil paints on panel

16" x 12"

available (unframed)  April, 2014

$275.
contact me   H E R E    for purchase and inquiries

This watery abstract painting began in acrylic on panel, and when I switched back to oils it seemed the right paint to finish it.  The painting is evocative of the blues, greens and reflections of the Pacific Ocean, then plunging to the underwater depths and rock formations of the ocean floor .

The painting is on archival panel, ready to frame in a standard sized frame.

"Napili Garden", abstract expressionist painting by Lynne Cunningham

"Napili Gardens", acrylic on paper

15" x 22", original painting (on reserve)

March, 2014   prints available

This abstract expressionist painting was painted in my studio last week, in a series of painting based on tropical landscapes.  The shade and light patterns inspired me to paint this, in an expressive statement that's more about form, pattern and gesture than reality!

I have affordable prints available, through a high quality source.  Here's the link to the painting above,  with this one and many others available:  "Napili Gardens" available as a print

I'm onto a series of acrylic paintings lately,  in the theme of abstract gardens and florals.  What better time than now, at the end of winter  . . .to enjoy a vibrant abstract of a floral garden!  You can visualize how this would look matted and framed in the image below.

The vibrant color palette and expressionist brushstrokes in this painting are lovely and fresh  . . .I enjoyed painting this one! View this as it would look once matted and framed:

Another version of a favorite small painting!    Our home is surrounded by agricultural fields and orchards . . .right now the winter wheat planted last fall is turning to an emerald green; the blooming fruit trees are blossoming in that same pink as in the painting above.  And so I have today "Cool Green Fields, version two".  These little acrylic paintings are so much fun to create !  ~ and make a good bright spot on the wall.

La Coleur Peche, abstract iris painting by Lynne Cunningham

"La Coleur Peche", 12" x 12"

acrylic on panel

February, 2014   available

please contact me  H E R E   for inquiries
purchase through Paypal or with a a credit card

Another version of an iris!  I like the liveliness and abstract qualities of this painting, yet it's clearly an iris bloom. En "la coleur peche",  the color peach.  I took the photo for this painting from a visit last year to an iris farm in the Napa Valley, and selected this standout flower from the masses of color in the fields.  If you live in California, iris are just starting to bloom . . .we've hardly had winter here.

If you have questions or inquiries or want to purchase, please contact me at the link above.  Shipping  / handling costs within the continental U.S. are $15.00 ~ California residents pay additional sales tax.

"Widepond, version two", a watery abstract pond painting by Lynne Cunningham

"Widepond, version two", acrylic on paper

22" x 30"  , on reserve until May 2014

$750  (unframed) shipped flat with protective
 board front and back

"Widepond", acrylic on paper

completed in 2007

15" x 22"      Sold

~ notecards available ~

The most recent painting "Widepond, version two",  the top photo is on full-sheet sized watercolor paper; the painting is 22" x 30" and matted and framed it will be about 30" x 40".

I've been looking at watery abstracts lately - my paintings, other artist's paintings and photography.  I absolutely love the subject of water and ponds, from an abstract perspective!

The first version of "Widepond" has been a good one for me; it sold to a collector and she's been in contact with me again recently.  The image was also the cover for a local magazine! see the link:   "In the News"
What's been interesting to me in the studio this week, while painting version two is the similarities in feeling of the two paintings - - although it's been years in between.  The first one is half-sheet; the second version is a full-sheet size and the larger the painting, the goal is to keep the painting "fresh" even in a larger size.

The painting is on reserve until May, 2014.  If you have questions on this painting  ,
