"Summer Aspens" aspen tree collage landscape by Carol Nelson

Summer Aspens

I was cleaning my studio ( I know, shocking.) I came across a piece of wc paper on which I had put a drizzle of gel medium. I thought I should see how the paper would take color with the medium on there.

Then I put a stencil of numbers on it, thinking it would make a really interesting background for some future painting....

Well, the future is now, because then I came across some paint chips in shades of green and some blue "tree strips".

Hmmmm, I wonder how these would go with that interesting  background I had just done....

Long story short - I did this collage painting today and my studio is still a mess.

Palette Knife Painting

Image looking up in the sky with the wind whipping around, trees blowing and a storm coming in. That is what I imagined when I painted this contemporary abstract. I blended the colors in the background, using wide brushes. The leaves and trees were laid in with thick layers so that there is texture on the linen. On Kay Wyne's Easel....

This is one of the projects I have been working on this week...a dyptych in oils. Each heavy-duty canvas is 48" x 30", so overall size is 48" x 60"...I have gone through numerous tubes of paint on this painting already. I have more color and depth to put in, and then the aspens need more paint. Actually, this is not my easel...I am using Sharon's easel because it large enough to hold two canvas' side by side. Tomorrow I will post the painting sitting on my easel.I went to the studio everyday this week to paint, and then today painted en plein aire....outside. It was a beautiful, sunny and warm October afternoon, and was fun painting with an old friend and a new friend. The location of the paint-out was great. I hope to go back tomorrow!!! Color My Trees

I had to paint a contemporary oil painting with color today. Lots of bright, vibrant color. I needed to put the paint on with thick broad strokes and the palette knife. I am going to let this one sit on my easel for several days and dry. I might go back in and paint some more.....not sure. It is on a gallery wrap canvas. I worked on several pieces at the studio today...had a great day painting with Sharon, Grant and Carol. It was exstremely hot in Dallas today, so painting and staying inside was just what I needed.
