This is my first completed painting of 2011. Hopefully an omen of good things to come, as the bison brings abundance to those she chooses to walk beside. The underpainting for this painting was another bison that I painted a couple of years ago, but it had issues and I knew I had to pretty much start over. While painting "Onward and Upward" I was thinking about the darkening days, the advent of the time of darkness. Many people with Bear as a totem look forward to winter, when one can go inside, both figuratively and literally, and recharge.

The interesting thing about Moose, as I've discovered from encounters with the Moose in the mountains of Colorado and Yellowstone Park, is how quickly and gracefully this huge animal can move. And how silently it can pick its way through the willows - one might pass by you only a few feet away and you might never even hear it. When in the presence of Moose, one can't help but respect the power of this animal. Even so, they are a bit goofy looking!

Painting #13 of my Painting a Day project. The other morning I found one of these little creatures in the grain bin in my horse barn. Trying to catch him while wearing thick work gloves was like a three ring circus - or a greased pig contest. I finally got him out of the bin and he scampered off and hid in a pile of hay. 4x5", oil on stretched canvas, ready to frame.
