The Painting: Playing off complimentary colors of blue and orange, the strength of this painting is remarkable in person. With my traditionally heavy oils without Impasto, the texture feel of the horse makes him come alive.

The Painting:  I am currently painting new pieces for the Jackson Hole Gallery.  Hollee Armstrong, the owner, wanted another large pull of horses so I did this striking piece that is busy curing and waiting to be shipped.   I have a music piece I am working on as well and one other composition of my new water pulls.

'Observing' Horse Equine Art Oil Painting by Laurie Pace

'Observing'

The Painting:  This was a rough ride of not doing what I wanted the painting to do.  Two full scrapings and I finally let the spirit find it's way through and this is what resulted. This is a strong painting and the images are literally carved into the oils.

The Painting: There was a feeling of change as I worked on this composition. It rolled several directions before the image began to form on the canvas. This day I was not "horsing" around. The color patterns are mystical and both soft and strong at the same time. Change is that way in our lives...ever so subtle at moments and WHAM very obvious at other times.

The Painting: The musing of color so small is a switch for me. Doing this small paintings truly enable me to see what is possible for the larger pieces. If I were working large I would not have patterned colors quite like they are here. The next step is to paint large and see what happens.

The Painting: Musical wanderings of color with the palette knife. The visceral blending of colors across the palette. No impasto with this one, just thick buttery oils laid on in pulled layers blending and creating a melody of it's own. Within the turns and curves you find the horses at play.

The Painting: I painted this in two days with layering. The first day was Saturday as I placed two layers of drippy acrylics. Then on Sunday I began working on two Arabian horses that just were not working on the canvas and I wiped over the surface with more colors. By Sunday afternoon I began to see what was evolving was a playful scene and the two ponies looked like escaped horses from a carousel. Hence the name. My mom named them. She was helping me cover paintings for my two NY gallery openings on Sunday and I was working on this composition. She always has a good comment to make. I am trying to encourage her to take some painting workshops with me. I have never taken any as I teach them... but it might be fun. ANY WAY, a collector had purchased another painting and wanted something larger. I shot her pictures of this one and she fell in love before the last paint stroke was on the canvas. So this one flew via fedex out on Monday and will arrive at it's new home today.

The Painting: This painting captured even more than I set out to capture. I wanted the boats and the wind... had not anticipated a change in the weather. The original sketch was in charcoal on canvas. Then I came in with acrylic paint to establish values. Morgan told me too much blue, too many mid tones... and then I took off with the loaded palette knife with lots of color playing into the blues...with pinks, violets, greens, yellows etc. The result was more amazing than I set out to paint. Reckless adventure seeing the clear skies on the horizon and racing toward it tacking back and forth in the wind to make forward progress.

The Painting: Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate....that is what you see and feel when you look at this painting. If there is one layer there are 14 or more layers of paint and pulls. This was done over a three day period. The first layer again was acrylic and then the next ones were pulls of thick buttery oils....colors overlaid and blending.

The Painting: This is a commission painting... a large one. Layers of color slowly over three days and I am almost done. I have to layer in some of the lighter blues this morning and then it will be done. There is no impasto in this painting, it is pure oil and will take years to cure out.

The Painting: Frustration began this painting, but uniqueness finished it. I could not tell you the numbers of layers of paint on this one, but the weave of colors is unbelievable. There is no way for me to photograph what you actually see with this one. Liquetex Heavy Body Acrylics at their best. I am refraining from too many oils right now as the summer heat and humidity are so strong in Texas. 108 heat yesterday.

The Thought: Thaw Malin iii wrote on my Facebook yesterday. We are suppose to be on Vacation. Terry is spending it in front of his computer. I am a bit disappointed as it would have been nice to get away from this heat of 108. Thaw said there is a law that an artist paints better on vacation, so when there is a vacation...the artist must travel and paint. Not sure where it is written, so we have to call it the unwritten law of the artist.

I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with Joy." 2 Corinthians 7:4

The Painting: Golden Acrylics and Liquitex Acrylics were on the palette as I began this pull. 97 percent of my pulls are in Oil, so an acrylic one is rare. The paint does not respond in the same manner, but I am able to double up on my layers and the dimensional aspect of the subject.
