Out On A Limb by Kay Wyne

Out On A Limb
12" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Bird Painting by Kay Wyne
Hot off my easel....below you can see the progression as I placed the birds and limbs with a rough painting.  I wanted to placement to allow the viewer's eye to roam around and go from bird to bird.
Once I get the general placement of the subject matter on the canvas, I block in colors.  Using large brushes, I can cover lots of space quickly.
More color, not alot of details yet.  Layers and layers of oils go on....
More paint and more paint.  I wanted a colorful and painterly piece...more paint.
And More color...setting the eyes in the birds were some of the last touches.  More layers especially in the nest, but trying to stay loose with my strokes.
Thanks for looking at the art posted here....more painting tomorrow.  It is fun to go into the studio and paint whatever I am in the mood to paint!  These songbirds were colorful and something different for me.  There might be more bird paintings for the 30 Paintings/30 Days!  Kay

"Above Fields of Gold" abstract bird painting by Colorado artist Kate Dardine

Back in 2008, a tornado swept through our neighborhood, and I created a painting of the dark, swirling clouds. I used that as an under painting for this piece, which captures some of the same ominous and unsettling feelings.

"Conversation With White Crows" abstract bird painting by Colorado artist Kate Dardine

Conversation with White Crows
12x12 acrylic on canvas
NFS

Inspired by the white crows of Vancouver, British Columbia. This abstract bird painting asks the question - is the white crow a sign of the end of life on earth, or the beginning of a new consciousness? Or both?

"Raven Glows" abstract bird painting by Kate Dardine (sold)

Painting # 32 of my Painting a Day project. I timed myself on this one in preparation for doing the Quick Draw at the Western Spirit Art Show. I allowed myself 45 minutes, start to finish. A few hairy moments when I wasn't sure it would come together, but overall I'm pleased with what I did in the limited amount of time.

"On the Wire" abstract bird painting by Kate Dardine

Painting #22 of my Painting a Day project. I experimented with this painting- I tried a new ground to paint on - canvas mounted on a panel, which is then mounted on a wooden "frame" which gives it almost a 3/4" profile. The other "new" thing is the perspective; I've been concentrating on close-ups, this one shows birds in the distance.

I see birds sitting on telephone and electric wires all the time, and love the pattern they make silhouetted against the sky.

"On the Wire" is a 4x4" oil on Ampersand panel. Click here for purchase info.

Winter Came Early - work in progress by Kate Dardine

This is a 30x30 oil on canvas that I am currently working on. I'm experimenting with using gold and bronze paints, and am enjoying the process. This painting was inspired by an early October snow storm that started out as freezing rain and then dumped nearly two feet of snow. The bird is painted from "life" - it is one of the many birds I have found dead and then preserved in plastic in the freezer in my studio. My grandkids love to come view my collection of birds: starling, robin, meadowlark, hummingbird and sparrow. You can read more about this painting here.
