Roosters, roosters and more roosters....this is my latest contemporary oil painting.  I started with an idea, and blocked off the background using neutral grays.  Then in a very loose way brushed in my roosters.  I used raw umber to draw in the shapes --- using a filbert brush.  I wanted an abstract but somewhat decorative look for the background.  So I started to add some swirly feather-like shapes to add to the gray.  The got out my trusty t-sqauare to add some straight lines.  I did not want to over-paint, so I forced myself to walk away from the painting at several stages of the painting.  Contact me if you are interested in this painting....kay@kwyne.com.

On my easel...I started this painting earlier this week.  I had wanted to do something different with the background, but got into the rooster and chickens, and could not stop.  I doubt that I can get the background work done at this point without messing up the chickens.  I have discovered after many years, it is best not to "fuss" with the paint strokes once they are in.  Make every brushstroke count.  After a wonderful Thanksgiving I am ready to get back into the studio and finish this painting.  I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving...now it is time to decorate for Christmas!  Kay

This is a fun and loose painting...when I started out, I had an idea in my mind of what I wanted the four images to be.  The first thing I did was put out some neutral colors for the background.  I usually use bright, bold colors so I had to keep telling myself that something neutral would make the roosters pop off the canvas.  I used some ink to produce some lettering.  I had five shades of grey ink that I used.  Then I started with some lines and geometric shapes.  Then the fun part.....I started with a wide brush and put in an outline on each rooster....I was afraid that I would over-paint this, so I forced myself to put the brushes down and go home.  The next day I used a liner to suggest the details of each rooster...and I did not want each one to be the same....so, here you go.  Quatro!  This painting is drying in the studio right now...they are fun, colorful, bold and looking for a new home.  Thanks for looking at this blog and my art.  Kay at 214-532-0325 or kay@kwyne.com

This City Rooster lives a few blocks away from Studio Art and Soul. Heritage Village (formerly known as Old City Park) has some very interesting animals...my reference photo for this painting was taken by one of my studio partners, Sharon Hodges. She was kind enough to let me use a fabulous image that she captured with her camera.
This plump rooster has bold brush strokes, and fills the canvas with his black and white feathers. His golden beak, red comb and black and white feathers make this contemporary City Rooster interesting. The background was applied with a palette knife, using naples yellow, white and yellow ochre. I signed this feathered creature, and will have it framed at Dutch Art Gallery. I think this City Rooster will look great in a gold frame. Thanks for viewing this blog. Yesterday was a good day. I had a visit from an old friend at the studio. We had not seen each other in about three years, and prior to that it had been about twenty years since we had caught up with each other. It was so good to see him, even though he had experienced some life-changing events and losses. It was a good opportunity to catch-up and visit. Just like in the above painting. These feathered friends are yacking away, having a heart-to-heart conversation. I had painted this last week, and put the finishing touches on it yesterday. The canvas might appear to be out of balance, but it was my intention to have have the roosters focused on each other. Once this painting is dry it will be hanging at The Dutch Art Gallery.
