Mixed Media Geologic Abstract Painting, "Ancient Artifacts 2" by Carol Nelson Fine Art

This highly textured geologic abstract features clay medallions, gold lace paper, and various texture mediums. I painted this as a demo for a recent workshop in Littleton, CO, where students followed along and created the most fabulous works of their own.

Mixed Media Geologic Abstract Painting, "IN SEARCH OF ROSE GOLD" by Carol Nelson Fine Art

This geologic abstract is heavily textured. It has gold accents that glow in the light. I love the soft transitions from lavender to pink to gold. In many areas there are multiple layers of color using Golden fluid acrylics. Colors were put down, then spritzed with water, allowing adjacent colors to mingle on the their own. It is endlessly fascinating to watch this process.

Mixed Media Geologic Abstract Painting, Contemporary Art “Ice Age" Carol Nelson Fine Art

This painting is a diptych - painted on two separate canvas panels.  What looks like two yellow stripes going across the painting is actually gold paint that caught the light brightly.  In person, the gold color is softer.

"Wood Rock" mixed media geologic abstract painting by Carol Nelson

"Wood Rock" 36x24 mixed media

This painting was based on a piece of petrified wood I found in a gem and mineral store in Taos.

The wood/stone was polished on one side, but the other side, which was rough, was the one I chose to paint.

I added more "stones" in the center crevice.  Those "stones" are actually pieces of shells and broken auto glass.

It was a lot of fun to paint a geologic abstract with the model, with it's amazing subtle color variations, sitting right in front of me.
