This is something different. It's actually two paintings sandwiched together. The top 6x6 painting is a mixed media collage with an epoxy coating. It is mounted on a 7x7 panel painted to coordinate with the top painting. I think the layered 3D effect is cool.
The top painting is actually a demo piece I did for a workshop I gave a couple months ago. I was showing the class how you can use a variety of materials (tyvek, burlap, tacks, in this case) to create a design and then seal all the parts under a layer of epoxy resin.

Leaf Series 2 - 10107 mixed media leaves © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This is one of three leaf paintings on a cradled panels. All three are approximately 18 x 6 inches. I used 300 lb watercolor paper for the leaves, then glued them to the painted panel. The whole thing was covered with a thick, crystal clear layer of epoxy which enhances and deepens the colors and creates such a beautiful effect.

This painting is a layering of painted paper aspen leaves on a free flowing acrylic background with metal leaf accents on canvas. Whew - got all that? Then I poured epoxy over the whole thing, curling the leaves a little so they are not lying flat on the canvas. The epoxy makes a thick crystal clear coating over the entire surface. I swear, anything you put the epoxy coating on looks really cool. I especially like to finish collage works that have lots of little pieces with epoxy because it seals all those loose edges.
I have done a number of paintings in the Pond Series, but this is the first one utilizing epoxy as a finishing technique. For purchase information, please see my website.
