"ABC FGH" mixed media abstract by Carol Nelson

"ABC FGH" 8x8 mixed media

detail view

I really wish the shiny metal parts of this painting showed better in the photo.  It adds so much when you can see all the shiny/dull and rough/smooth parts of this mixed media piece.

Yes, I know "ABC FGH" is not the most inspired title, but when my husband suggested it, I couldn't get it out of my head.

"Layers 3" revised version of abstract acrylic collage by Carol Nelson

"Layers 3" 8x8 inch mixed media collage

This is the new version of a painting I did last month.  The only difference is the addition of the black circular squiggles.  I admit to being terrified of gestural marks such as these - ESPECIALLY if the painting beneath is already done.

It would be easy to really screw up a half way decent painting by adding these quick marks that cannot be easily controlled.  Their beauty is in their spontaneous flow of movement.

So these were done as an acrylic skin on a sheet of plastic.  The black lines are dimensional paint (Tulip and Lumiere are two brands).
After the dimensional lines are dry, cover them with soft gel gloss, clear self leveling gel, or clear tar gel - all Golden products, although other manufacturers make similar products.

You end up with the black lines (in this case) in a sheet of clear acrylic that you can cut up, and arrange on your painting any way you choose.

Here's a view of some other squiggles I have ready to go.

The beige background is the wood of the table.

"Rumors" mixed media abstract contemporary painting by Carol Nelson

"Rumors" 16x12

In this abstract on canvas, I was exploring letters, colors, and gestural marks in an nonrepresentational painting.

For some reason, the color in the lower photo is much more accurate.  There must be some new problem with Blogger about color reproduction, because the image I uploaded is not so saturated.

Flaming Gorge, 12066, contemporary mixed media abstract by Carol Nelson Fine Art

Flaming Gorge

This painting has a strong geologic feel to it, even though it is abstract.  I started out with a layer of metal leaf .  I'm sorry it's so hard to see the shine of the metal leaf in a photograph.

Then I painted several transparent and opaque layers, using water misting to get the paint to flow and a stream of hot air from a hair dryer to somewhat direct the flow.  Reminded me of herding cats (not that I've ever done that.)
