Mixed Media Geologic Abstract Painting "Arroyo" by Carol Nelson Fine Art

This painting is a large (48x36 inch) triptych on three wood panels, each measuring 48x12 inches.  I added a LOT of texture, including gritty modeling compound, rocks, and glass blobs.

The most exciting thing about this painting is hardly even visible in a photo.  The area around the rocks has a pouring of epoxy resin resembling water.

"Winter Garden"

This is another in my  series of tree collages.  What doesn't show in this photo image is the sparkle of the pearl mica flake - it just looks dirty yellow in the photo.

"New World Trilogy" mixed media abstract triptych by Carol Nelson

I love tall skinny canvases and panels - maybe because it's what I am not.  These measure 6 inches wide by 48 inches tall.  For some reason, composition is a breeze with this size.

I started out with some gold metal leaf in a random pattern on my black gessoed panels.  The stripes are Golden fine pumice gel that I used a sculpting tool to make stripes.

I messed around with some corrugated paper - some painted blue green, but decided to try fiber paste.  I also antiqued the gold leaf using raw umber and wiping most of it off.

Then I added Blended Fibers by Liquitex.  It dries transparent, but when you paint on it, it has texture and absorbs the paint differently than the black gessoed surface.

The rest of the panels was painted with Golden Fluid Acrylics in black, white, raw umber, and Paynes gray. I was going for a muted palette where the metal leaf is the star.  I'm in the process of adding epoxy resin to the metal leaf areas only.  I think the play of shiny and matte surfaces will be good.

As you can see by comparing the two images above, I tweaked the values and improved the painting so much.  I also added a "sun".

This painting is similar in method to the one I posted yesterday.  The Gessobord panel on which it is painted, was heavily textured before the paint (Golden Fluid and/or Golden High Flow) was poured on it.

This is a demo painting from my recent workshop at The Gallery at Midtown in Dallas, Texas.  Thanks to Teta Smith for taking care of my every need and making me feel like a Diva.

Thanks also to Dana Brown at Ampersand for donating 11x14 Gessobord panels for the class.  They make beautiful surfaces for this textured pour technique.

"Iron Strata" mixed media collage with metal by Carol Nelson

I was pounding things flat with a hammer and my new anvil today.  This painting was sitting near the table I was working on.

It's a painting I did about a year ago.  I've brought it to several workshops as an example of using paper to look like rusted iron (using iron paint.)

This curled piece of flattened copper wire looks great as a little embellishment on this painting.

"USO Tour"

This is a demo painting I did for my mixed media workshop over the weekend.  I called it "USO Tour" because it reminded me of the trips made by celebrities to entertain the troops.  The painting has fresh faces, bling, and music all incorporated into the design.

I am pleased with the color palette which has some subtle gray-greens in the background, and the occasional surprise color choices of blue and purple.

This was a demo piece I did for a mixed media workshop I was teaching last weekend.  The letters are words I found in the Sunday paper advertising section.

I like seeing the title of a painting IN the painting.  Also, you will notice some corrugated cardboard, burlap, stenciled letters, and gestural marks.

This painting is a demo I did for private instruction students in my studio.  I was trying for a more muted version of my tree paintings.  This one has pearl mica flake "snow", which does not photograph well, but is a really beautiful effect.

This painting is a demo I did for my Abstracted Tree class yesterday.  I used Golden's Pearl Mica Flake (small) for the "snow".
I really like the effect, and wish you could see it better in the photo.  It goes on as a white gel, but after it dries, all you see is the little reflective mica flakes.

This painting is another in my letters/numbers series of layered collage paintings.  Like a dummy, I forgot to photograph it before I applied a layer of epoxy resin, so there is glare and reflections in the dark areas.

"Ancient Mysteries" geologic abstract painting by Carol Nelson

"Ancient Mysteries" 36x40 inches

First painting of 2014!  It's a departure from my normal saturated earthy palette.  It even has pink in it - a color I usually hate, but it seems to work here.

This painting was torturous for me.  There must be 8 or more layers of paint as I struggled to find the right color combination.  Close inspection reveals some of the previous color choices.

The unusual texture is achieved with Golden's Glass Bead Gel.  The little beads are about the size of a period on this page.  That isn't very big, but when you spread them out on the surface with a palette knife, they refract the light in an unusual manner.  It's also interesting the way you can charge in another color after they're dry, and watch the color working it's way into the beads.

"Layers 3" revised version of abstract acrylic collage by Carol Nelson

"Layers 3" 8x8 inch mixed media collage

This is the new version of a painting I did last month.  The only difference is the addition of the black circular squiggles.  I admit to being terrified of gestural marks such as these - ESPECIALLY if the painting beneath is already done.

It would be easy to really screw up a half way decent painting by adding these quick marks that cannot be easily controlled.  Their beauty is in their spontaneous flow of movement.

So these were done as an acrylic skin on a sheet of plastic.  The black lines are dimensional paint (Tulip and Lumiere are two brands).
After the dimensional lines are dry, cover them with soft gel gloss, clear self leveling gel, or clear tar gel - all Golden products, although other manufacturers make similar products.

You end up with the black lines (in this case) in a sheet of clear acrylic that you can cut up, and arrange on your painting any way you choose.
