TGIF everyone! I painted this watercolor of three pears yesterday as a quick demo for my class. I was attracted to these pears in the store because of their interesting speckles, which I thought would be fun to paint with my Funny Brush (which I don't use very often).
This is a abstracted watercolor painting of a tree frog (or is it a toad?) who resides at our local Denver Zoo. I don't know that much about amphibians but I read the other day that there are almost 5,000 species of frogs and that a captive frog can live for up to 40 years.
This is an abstracted landscape using Golden liquid acrylics on synthetic Yupo "paper"--one of my favorite watermedia painting surfaces. I love the way the paint reacts to the super smooth surface and the mercurial color mixing you get as a result.
One of my favorite approaches to figure painting is abstracted watercolor. I love exploring the relationships of cool and warm tones as they move over the figure. This was painted quickly (as you can see from my drips!) from the live model.
I love painting the colors and abstract textures of New Mexico. Here the old fence and the smooth adobe contrast caught my eye. This is a transparent watercolor "pour" painting where the typically primary colors are added in layers as other layers are masked or blocked out.
While Hopi Kachina carvings are often called "dolls," I've read that they are actually religious icons, meticulously-carved from cottonwood root and painted to represent figures from mythology. These beautiful Kachinas (which can take hundreds of forms) belonged to a friend and loved their shapes and symbolism. The sunflower is also one of my favorite flowers.
