Now is a good time for a challenge!

From time to time I'll get an urge to create an "abstract" painting. This painting is as abstract as I get.

I don't know if there are any "rules", and to that end I've joined an online work shop with a California artist, Melinda Cootsona. I really like her work and she offers awesome inspiration and guidance.

I'm going to set up a new collection on my website titled "Projects". You can view my progress and it would be helpful to have your insights and suggestions.

The paintings below are two of the assignments I've completed so far.

Bountiful by Kay Wyne

Bountiful
36" x 60" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Painting
Starting with a photograph of John's roses, I quickly added some other flowers to the canvas.  This painting is bold, colorful and graphic.  It has brushstrokes that you can see, along with palette knife work, both creating lots of texture.  This painting is hanging at the studio drying, and while I may make some minor changes, it is completed.  The thick paint will take a while to dry, and then I will need to varnish.  The sides of the canvas are painted black, and a frame is optional.  Thanks for looking at Bountiful,  Contact Kay for more information on this contemporary floral.  Kay

Floral Abstract Painting with a flair, "Imperial" by Elizabeth Chapman

Imperial
Acrylic on 24"W x 36"H canvas

Available

More of my contemporary abstracts can be seen by clicking: HERE

This one became another floral abstract although that wasn't the intent. It's called going with the flow of the painting. Sometimes it's just better not to fight it....

Floral Abstract Contemporary Painting "Sole" by Elizabeth Chapman

Sole
Acrylic on 24" x 24" x 1.5" canvas
Available

In love with a single flower plus bud in this green vase.  This was painted from a still life set up from the annual peonie blooms in our back yard.  It is meant to be an abstract capturing more of the essence or the gesturally feel of the floral than a realistic representation.  Different this year in that I chose to work from a single stem rather than a bouquet.  Just changing it up a bit…and challenging myself.

Red Poppy Floral Warmup ~ by Nancy Standlee

Red Poppy #4
5 1/2 x 7 1/2 acrylic on watercolor paper

This floral was painted as a practice warm-up before the actual painting begins. I learned this technique in a Robert Burridge workshop and he completes multiple paint sketches of the same subject usually 3 to 6. It's teaching yourself about composition and color and "how to paint".
