This magnificent cathedral in Paris was one of my favorite
spots during the year I spent as a student there, 1973.
My best friend and musical mentor, Courtney Zirkle,
introduced me to the weekly organ concerts on Sunday evenings
at Notre Dame.
Thirty-three years later, while visiting Paris with our oldest children,
we were delighted to enjoy one of these concerts that were
still being held every Sunday.

In Progress - Day 1 - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth
Day 1
This
is a new painting I started this morning. I started out by covering an
old painting with a layer of white gesso, to build up texture on the
canvas. When the gesso was completely dry, I made wide, sweeping
gesture marks on the canvas with a black Caran d'Arche crayon. To add
more texture and to "veil" some of the markings, I made a mixture of
gloss medium, slow-dri blending medium and a little bit of gesso and
painted out some of the lines. I didn't worry too much about being neat
as I "sloshed" the paint on the canvas. At this point in the painting
process, I'm only thinking about establishing a structure that will be
the underpinning of the finished painting. Some of the marks will show
through and others will not.

I set up a display at a small fair in my town of Davis, California on Sunday; I do shows sabout 3 times a year . . . it's fun when your display is finally set up, ready to show and then comes the anticipation. The anticipation is for what kind of day it will be, see who comes by, and what direction the conversations take, especially interesting in my town where we have a big appreciation for the arts.
One also receives immediate feedback on the art you are making when you see what pieces are being picked up, what gets sold and what you hear from people's reactions. It's always a little surprising as it was on Sunday - my figurative work of these geese was the first sale. I also had a fascinating conversation with a young guy who is doing concept art - the illustrative / sci fi or fantasty / super hero genre of art that's based on figurative and is a really interesting fusion.
The interest in the geese, the conversation about figurative got me to thinking again. I'm going to paint and draw some more contemporary figurative this coming fall / winter, more in the abstract !

SOLD This is an original abstract watercolor painting that measures 6 x 6 unframed. This painting was completed just after we returned from a 9 day adventure with two grandchildren from Denver to Yellowstone. I was insane and therefore the painting reflects my thought process. In order to regain some sense of reality and patience I needed to paint, paint and paint. Thank God for vacations and for parents coming to pick up the grandchildren after the vacation.
