This piece started out as a pure nonrepresentational abstract with corrugated paper and other mixed media materials. After studying it a while, I saw places that kind of looked like hibiscus/poppy flowers, so I developed those shapes a little more.
I tell my students all the time that there is a stage (in painting) when you have to let the painting talk to you - if you let it, it will reveal itself to you. This only happens, by the way, if you step back and look at your painting from a distance. You see things that are not obvious up close.
