This is a young woman reading in the gardens of Norton Art Gallery here Shreveport. When I was first planning this composition, I cropped it square, but then I decided that a tall orientation would better show the majesty of the garden surrounding this simple figure. I used a red underpainting for the grassy area, to make the green of the lawn seem more vibrant. The Japanese maple on the right, the girl’s top and her reflection in the pool gave me more opportunities to use a favorite paint color, Old Holland New Masters Naphthol Red Medium ... yum!
