I have a friend who is Buddhist and for a long time I've been sketching and trying out ideas. This one turned into a painting. The chant "Om Mani Padme Hum" is written around the edges.

Age 4, 1930 - a contemporary figurative painting by Joanie Springer

This was a breakthrough painting, not only is it in oils (which I haven’t been able to use in awhile due to allergies to linseed oil), but it’s textured oil which delights my soul to work with. And I used a reference photo of my mother at age 4, 1930, so of course it’s exceptionally dear.
