I'm back at the easel after my opening and fired-up as ever to paint the many bizarre and quirky folks that are lurking in my sketchbooks. The next few months will bring with it some exciting events; new venues, a group show with 5 of my favorite San Diego artists, ArtWalk in April, a solo show in July, and plenty of art-filled affairs in between. My blog is definitely the best place to keep on top of where you might find my paintings on exhibit. You knew there had to be a woman keeping all those little men organized...Pinky is the last in my Fairy Tale Series. Whew! Now I plan to take a little breather and then start on the next show scheduled for end of December at the Lyceum Theater. Couldn't be more different. From Fairy Tales to an end-of-the-world theme. Hmmm...

OK, it's the fourth year in a row and you'd think I'd get used to it by now. My son is taking off for his last year of school at the University of Arizona. I have mixed feelings. To say the least. He loves school, the college life, the desert and living on his own. And I'm happy about all of that...really. It's just that...I kinda like havin' him around. Eating and napping and eating some more. Always with the food, this one. When he's not eating he's talking about it and planning meals and grocery lists. Surprising that he's such a skinny guy. Well, it's my fourth year and I'm still whining about this leaving business. So once again, my son, I will tell you to spread your wings but remember your roots. (And answer your cell phone when I call!)

Sweet Tart by Brenda York

When I was a kid one of my favorite candies was Sweet Tarts. Just thinking about it makes my jaws tingle. I loved the contrast of the sweet fruitiness and the biting, acidic sour taste. Almost painful to eat a whole package. But eat them, I did. Knowing that my tongue would be raw for days afterward did not stop me. Kind of a metaphor for life, I guess. Sweet and sour--hard to appreciate one without the other. And so I try to apply this thinking to the next phase of this wacky life journey--one kid just left for his last year of college (we hope) and his younger sister practically has one foot out the door already. She can't wait for her turn at leaving for college. And that's what this painting is about: the sweetness of having your own space again and the absolute blue funk of dropping off your "baby" at school six hours away. Sweet and sour. Shadows and light. You need one to fully appreciate the other.
