"OLD TOWN HOLLIES" palette knife painting by NM artist Dee Sanchez

"OLD TOWN HOLLIES"
9x12"
oil on panel

My favorite little shop in Old Town.
It's no longer the same store and the hollyhocks are gone.

I loved painting the warmth of the adobe and softness of the flowers.

"Santa Fe Doors: Yellow Door in Wooded Area" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor painting

A brief return to my matted, watercolor Santa Fe doors series. I thought that a yellow door might cheer me up with all of this wretched rainy weather here in Colorado.  Adobe and yellow wood, with woods behind.  A bit mysterious, don't you think?  Especially in Santa Fe with all of the red and turquoise around.  Out of the ordinary.

"Santa Fe Spring" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Well, this painting took an eternity to paint to my satisfaction.  I wondered if the process would ever end!  Canyon Road is the most famous art gallery road in Santa Fe and there was a gallery behind this fabulous blooming decorate crabtree.  Years ago I painted it in pastel and finally succumbed to the urge to paint it in oils with primarily palette knives and an occasional brushstroke.  This has been sitting in my head, tempting me forever, and finally, here it is ready for framing and a wall.  Whew!

"Santa Fe Doors: Arch Over Blue", matted watercolor and ink painting by Karla Nolan

Another in my Santa Fe doors series.  Painting these doors have had me wanting to visit this charming city once again but with the early winter snows, I think I'll wait until it warms up a bit!  I believe that Santa Fe's altitude is even higher than ours is in Fort Collins!  It can get bitterly cold even though it's about seven hours south of us!  Go figure...

"Santa Fe Doors: The Bell", matted watercolor and ink painting by Karla Nolan

My husband and I are on vacation in California and I am behind in my art blog posts, so here goes, another taste of Santa Fe, doors, adobe and such.  As I recall, the skies were quite blue the day I saw this door, it was a hot and dry day but knowing the way adobe walls are built, good insulation, I knew it would be nice and cool inside the rooms of this building...and it was..  This was actually an outside courtside wall, a small patio was located behind it, then the room in which we stayed.  I don't know the significance of the bell, it was just there, but the whole scene was charming, which is what I remember best about Santa Fe:  the charm and ambience of the city.

"Santa Fe Doors: Old Wood, Painted Adobe" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting matted to 8"x10"

Another in the series of the Santa Fe doors.  This is the land of enchantment, so they say, and I am in agreement.  I have no idea who painted the adobe wall, it's not really a door, but it is enchanting as is the heavy old wooden door to the left.  It seemed to take forever to paint this small piece, trying to get it right but no too right!  If it's "too right", why it's a photograph and that wasn't my goal, I'd rather you get the gist of the atmosphere in sweet Santa Fe!

"Santa Fe Door: Cobalt" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting, matted to 8"x10"

Santa Fe, New Mexico, is an extraordinary town.  It is so old, one of the very first towns in North America, long before it became the United States.  Most living structures are adobe and Canyon Road is probably the most famous road due to the large amount of art galleries located on it.  Some of the houses have  amazing doors so I decided to devote some watercolor and ink time to them.  Here is my first door -- a bright blue cobalt wooden arch of a door.  I've painted five more so far, so get ready for an occasional post to entice you to visit wondrous Santa Fe.
