The deer and elk migrated weeks ago to the warmer valley below. The animals that stay behind will find a cozy place under the snow to hibernate, fish will live comfortably under the ice and aspens shed their leaves. Occasionally a wind breaks the winter silence as it whistles through the tree tops. The tall pines sway back and forth, adding a soft rhythmic creaking to the gentle sounds of Winter.

Private sunny meadows like this are around every corner in Colorado’s Back Country. Sit quietly under a tree for a bit and you won’t believe how noisy this place gets when all the residents forget you are there. Even if you can’t see them, you can identify all the critters around you by their individual chattering's. You might want to quietly leave if you hear the grunts or bawls of a bear clunking through the woods. They can get cranky.

An intriguing little stand of Black Timber thrives because their roots are anchored deep into cracks in the rocks. As decomposition occurs, rich soil is created allowing tiny plants to thrive. This golden hillside is in the process of evolving. Some of the rocks have been covered by a new layer of humic compost.
