SUMMER SALE-Textured Mixed Media Abstract Painting, "ARROYO," by Mixed Media Artist Carol Nelson Fine Art

This is painting is a diptych - two panels EACH measuring 36 inches tall by 12 inches wide.  The original painting is sold, but this reproduction has been EMBELLISHED  by me with textural "stones" that I create and paint.  There are also shell fragments attached to the surface.  The result is a heavily textured reproduction very similar to the original.

Mixed Media Southwest Abstract Landscape, "Tucson Vibe", by International Mixed Media Abstract Artist Carol Nelson

"Tucson Vibe" 10x10 mixed media by Carol Nelson

I was inspired by the colors of the desert in Arizona on my recent trip to Tuscon, where I taught a workshop for the Contemporary Artists of Southern Arizona (CASA).

This painting features my newly developed "leftover sandwich" technique for creating abstract work. This technique, along with many of my other processes, will soon be available in a video I'm working on. We haven't gotten the filming done yet, but expect to in about two weeks.

After post-production work, it should become available by the end of May.

This mixed media painting has many textural elements to it, including prepared tyvek, plaster of paris "stones", corrugated paper, and caulk squiggle. I wanted to do a neutral palette painting with one predominant accent color - in this case the turquoise.

"Color Study 5”, textured mixed media abstract by Colorado contemporary mixed media artist Carol Nelson

The 5th in my Color Study series, this one has a little modeling compound applied to the paper before I started painting.  I was after a more muted palette than my usual boisterous color party.

I had not intended on doing a landscape, but it formed on the paper in front of me, so what else could I do.  The addition of the bush forms really confirmed that it was a landscape.

I like high horizon landscapes because you can do so much abstraction with the majority of the painting.  If you cover up the upper quarter of this painting, it becomes a total geologic abstract.

This is another in my color study series done on Fabriano 90 lb water color paper.  In this one, I was obviously using color complements - opposite on the color wheel.

The circular patterns are from a couple pieces of patterned rice paper I collaged on to the painting (couldn't help myself.)

So, what is this Color Study series, you may ask?  It's playing with design, composition, and color combinations on 8x10 wc paper.  If I come up with something I really like (they're not ALL my favorites), they may end up painted on canvas or panel in a larger format.

These studies are an excellent way to learn composition, try new things, and practice mixing your paints in an informal way.  I see many students in my classes who have not taken the time to really get to know their paints.

If you create a dud on 8x10 wc paper, who cares?  If your dud is 24x30, you end up very frustrated and your POCKETBOOK CARES!

"Golden Dawn" 6x12 abstract landscape by Carol Nelson

 

This painting was a demo for my recent workshop in Louisville, CO.  The board was heavily textured with modeling compound, then allowed to thoroughly dry for 2 days.  By the third day, the class was ready to pour mixed acrylic paints over their textured surfaces.

I have to say this is a very relaxing process because you have to WAIT and allow the colors to find their way through the texture and mingle together.  In a workshop setting, it is advisable to have another painting to work on simultaneously rather than just sit there watching paint mix.

The "sun" in this case was made from modeling clay into which I embossed a pattern.  I've decided that buying a block of air dry modeling clay is a lot less hassle than making my own cold porcelain, which is very messy.  At least is was messy for me because I ended up with corn starch all over my kitchen.

This mixed media piece has tyvek, clear glass blobs, black pebbles, and other collage materials.

After the photo was taken, I added clear epoxy resin in the areas with the pebbles and the tyvek.  ¬¬
