Calm After The Storm, Beach and Ocean Paintings by Amy Whitehouse

Once again, it has been a long time since I've posted. My new job as Art teacher to Kindergarteners, and First, Second, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Graders,

has filled my weeks.

It is gratifying work if demanding.

This past week, as one little second grade boy was working,

he said,

"This is the best art project ever!"

That did my heart good.

This morning I'm trying to make sense of the clutter in my studio.

I am reposting this little painting as it's one of my favorites,

and it reminds me to do my own Art

Beach, Contemporary Seascape Paintings by Amy Whitehouse

As you know, I could paint the ocean and the beach everyday,

and not get tired of the subject.

Especially when it's 108 degrees outside as it is now, here in the desert.

As I prepare for my new position as Art Teacher for grades K-2 and 6-8

YIKES

I haven't had as much time to paint.

But this is my latest, and I'm pretty happy with it.

I can almost feel the powdery sand all over my feet,

and almost hear the comforting sound of the surf.

Thinking Coastal, Contemporary Abstract Seascape Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

The texture of this painting was achieved with

coarse pumice gel applied with a broad palette knife.

Acrylic paint was added to the pumice gel

as well as after the first layer had dried.

The 1.5" sides of the canvas are finished and painted in the same colors

so this is ready to hang.

This has become a fascinating method of

creating art, and it takes a little less time

than painting. I like to think that

one discipline only helps the other.

Beach Day, Beach and Ocean Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

Painting 34 of CHALLENGE 56

Countless layers of paint make up this scene, as did

countless compositions.

Four days of painting, scraping, paper-towelling,

lightly adding layers, and ever so slightly tweaking,

and finally I think I found the stopping point.

I wanted to show the reflection of the sky on the wet sand,

as well as the grasses on the border of the beach.

And I wanted to achieve some abstraction

while developing a softer beach scene.
