There's just no other way to explain their behavior.  And there are no Operating Instructions (that I know of) written in Alien-speak. What to do? Wait it out. Whatever form the alien insanity takes today--it will certainly mutate tomorrow. And if you're an artist or a writer or... a space explorer--it's just more grist for the mill.
